Does The Seller Still Set The Terms?

spokesperson for goodbuyguys.com

spokesperson for goodbuyguys.com

A classic concept in business is that “the seller sets the terms”. That means that the seller (the one that has an item or service that you want to buy) sets the terms (the price, the delivery date, the time when payment is due) and the buyer can either accept those terms, negotiate for something that they think is more favorable, or walk away. It’s been done that way for years.

We offer very liberal terms to customers to whom we extend credit. We’ll ship your orders today and give you 30 days to pay. In the business world, that’s called NET 30. We are extended the same terms from our suppliers and the manufacturers we represent, and when things are working as they should we are able to pay them in a timely manner because that’s how our customers pay us.

Recently, we have noticed a really troubling trend among more and more of our customers. Those that have had credit with us for years have started sending us orders with terms of NET 45 or even NET 60 as when they intended to pay us.

They don’t ask for extended terms. They don’t negotiate for a more favorable (for them) payment schedule. They just dictate that the terms have changed.

We regularly reject these orders (Even after 28 years, it is painful to turn down business) and have even had to cut a few long time customers loose. We hate it, but we have no choice.

One or two major players (buyers) who think that they can unilaterally change payment terms has the potential to put a system in jeopardy that really helps drive our nation’s economic engine.

Small business needs to stand their ground and continue to “set the terms”.

Customer Service With A Paper Bag Over Your Head

spokesperson for goodbuyguys.comIn days gone by, putting a bag over your head was a way to create a disguise, make a mask, or get a laugh.  Now, it seems it has morphed into a way to hide your shame when you are embarrassed.

It has been used by fans of sports teams that are perennial losers, and now seems to have been also adopted by customer service reps for one of the country’s largest internet service providers. Customer service reps who are apparently so shamed by the quality of their employers’ customer support that they don’t want to have their identities known.

We have been plagued by several days of intemitent and extended internet service outages over the last week and have spent hours on the phone with customer service reps (This isp will remain anonymous for the moment, lest you be unable to read this post).

This is one of the largest communications companies in the United States, and, unbelievably, their customer services reps have been given the option of not providing callers their names.  When you ask again for their last names, they respond that they do not have to provide you with that information.

They have my name, my company name, my phone number and access to my internet use, yet feel that it is acceptable to provide no information to me, their customer.

I can only assume that they are so embarrassed by the quality of their service that they are afraid to let their customer know who they really are.

It must be uncomfortable to spend your entire work day with a paper bag over your head.

Concert Industry Is Healthy, But Is It Sustainable

jeff harrison at goodbuyguys.comOne of my favorite industry trade journals, Pro Sound News, does a series of “state of the industry” reports in its October issue, addressing different segments of the professional audio business.

We spent thirty+ years in the sound reinforcement business, producing live events, so I am always interested in how this part of the industry is doing.

The first thing that caught my eye was the terrific growth in revenues for the business. The article reports that ticket sales through the first six months of the year were up 23% over the same period last year and that ticket sales exceeded 21 million.  So far, so good.

The number that really concerned me was the increase in average ticket price-up 11.5% to an average cost of $88.03.

It seems unlikely that, even in a recovering economic climate, that this number is sustainable.

By the way, the first concert ticket I ever bought was for Same and Dave.  It cost $2.50!

Alkaline Batteries Dead? Don’t Count Out Duracell Just Yet

spokesperson for goodbuyguys.comDuracell is known for making the best alkaline batteries in the world, but new and more reliable rechargeables have made inroads into alkaline sales.  Does that mean that the Coppertop is on its way out?

Not according to Interbrand, the consulting company that rates the world’s top 100 brands.

After being absent for a couple of years, Duracell has moved back onto the top 100 list.  Duracell, one of three top 100 brands in the Procter and Gamble family, lands at number 85 and is given a value of $4.65 billion by Interbrand.

It seems that there is still nothing that can challenge Duracell’s alkaline battery technology when it comes to reliability and long life.

Goodbuyguys.com is proud to offer the Procell line of Duracell alkaline batteries, the professionals number one choice for today’s wireless microphones.

Worried About Loss Of Wireless Spectrum? Congressman Rush Has Your Back

mic stand mike for goodbuyguys.comThe continued dilution of available spectrum for wireless mics is being elevated from the FCC to Congress, thanks to Congressman Bobby Rus (D-IL).

Congressman Ross, who represents the district that is the home of wireless mic giant Shure (Niles, IL) has introduced “The Wireless Microphone Users Interfernece Protection Act of 2013” in an attempt to slow the continued auctioning of wireless spectrum to the highest bidder.

Congressman Rush’s bill (H.R. 2911) addresses the need to protect some of the UHF spectrum for the use of professional audio and expansion of the process for licensing users of wireless mics.

We applaud Congressman Rush’s efforts and recommend that you contact him (http://rush.house.gov/) and your own congressman to show your support for the bill.

If You Think Our Shipping Costs Are Too High Now, You Better Prepare Yourself

spokesperson for goodbuyguys.comThe stuff we sell is heavy. Gaffers tape is heavy. Batteries are heavy. Microphone stands are really heavy.

When you place an order with us, our web sites interface with UPS and your shipping costs are calculated based on the weight of the items in the order and your zip code (the distance from our North Carolina warehosue). There are additional costs if your address is residential or you want expedited shpping (e.g. next day air).

Those costs have a big impact on what you actually pay, and those costs are going to get much higher, very soon.

UPS has just finished negotiating a new contract with their drivers, the ones that are represented by the Teamsters Union. The numbers will astound you. There is a built in raise every year over the five year life of the contract and it means that many UPS drivers will be making as much as $25,000 more five years from now.

That $25,000 is going to come from everyone who uses UPS, one box at a time.

We think that UPS provides a good service, and will, in all likelihood, continue to use them. However, knowing what is in store with the regular UPS rate increases that come into play every year, it is now time for us to consider an alternative carrier for at least some of our orders.

Maybe It’s Not As Tough To Be A Linkedin Influencer As I Thought

spokesperson for goodbuyguys.comAfter avoiding doing anything with my LinkedIn account, I have found myself now spending a little time there every day.

What’s changed?  It’s LinkedIn Influencers.

LinkedIn has managed to get some of the most influential minds in lots of different areas (not just business or tech) to post compelling content that is available to anyone with a LinkedIn account.

Noted experts like Guy Kawasaki,  T. Boone Pickens,  Arianna Huffington,  Meg Whitman and hundreds of others are regularly posting long form content about whatever subject that has caught their attention at the moment.  There is lots of good information and some surprising insights here.

Unfortunately, not everything you find there is of comparable value.

CBS News travel editor Peter Greenberg’s post from earlier this week.  “Never Leave Home Without a Roll of Duct Tape“.

Press Blackout? Really?

spokesperson for goodbuyguys.comI have regularly written about the value of ad supported trade publications for the concert production industry.  They may be supported by advertisers, but they have lots of quality editorial content, and they are free.

One of my favorites is Pro Sound News.  It is full of useful info and great pictures of some of the biggest concert tours in the world.

One section I always look at is a page called “Center Stage“.  It lists the personnel, production companies and equipment used by the ten largest concert tours in the country.

I look for our customers, companies I have worked with and personnel I might actually know.  It is also a good place to see which companies are most active and what types of equipment are most in demand.

For the second month in a row,  one of this season’s top three tours, Taylor Swift, has listed only this information.

No audio information due to press blackout

What possible reason could there be for Taylor Swift’s handlers to care who knows what kind of sound equipment is being used on tour?

We don’t know the answer to that question, but we do know the answer to a similar one.

Who else might care what sort of equipment is being used on this tour?  The equipment advertisers whose full page ads allow the magaine to be free.  If the magazine is unable to showcase manufacturers equipment being used on important tours, then those manufacturers have much less reason to buy the ads.

Micromanagement at this level screams “control freak” and there is no place for it in the trade journal publishing business.

There’s no need to include Taylor Swift in the listing of the top ten.  Instead of listing her name, just black her out as well.

“Did You Change The Batteries?”

mic stand mike for goodbuyguys.comThat’s the first thing any singer, minister, ceo or broadcaster is going to ask the sound person when there is a wireless mic failure.  Wireless mics are much more reliable than they were just a few years ago, but they still are subject to lots of outside interference and will never be as reliable as a cabled mic.

As battery life gets better and better, there is a temptation among sound people to stretch the life of the battery, but they do it at their own peril.

The discharge of a battery when used in a wireless mic is not “linear”, which means that after slowly discharging over an extended period of time, an battery (either alkaline or rechargeable) can quickly lose its remaining power and drop to a voltage where wireless mic performance is no longer predictable or reliable.

While your employer will appreciate your efforts to save a little money when things are going well, if your answer to the “did you change the batteries” question is “no“, then you may find yourself looking for another job.

Customers Provide New Opportunities By”Re-Purposing” Your Products

good idea jeff from goodbuyguys.comSeveral years ago we got a series of phone calls about this time of year from prospective customers who were interested in a product we sold,  bi-filament tape, but they wanted it in a much wider width than we offered.

This product is primarily sold for bundling of heavy objects like pipe and for sealing very heavy parcels.  We used it to seal large boxes of batteries and decided we might as well offer it to customers, especially since we found it so useful.

Bi-filament tape is expensive, even in the standard two inch width, and these callers were looking for it in a six inch wider version.  They only wanted a roll or two, and we weren’t really interested in investing in a product when we didn’t really understand how it was being used.

It turns out these callers were interested in building hexayurts (we knew nothing about this type of shelter) for Burning Man, an event that we had never heard of.

Skip forward three years and we now find that six inch bi-filament tape is a steady seller and we are involved with lots of very interesting people who are engaged with hexayurt development.

What happened?  We took a minute to listen to the callers.  Taking the time to understand what a hexayurt was and how it was assembled was all that was necessary for us to decide to stock bi-filament tape in six inch widths.

Customers we knew nothing about using a product in a way that was foreign to us has led us to an opportunity that was laid in our laps.  All we had to do was listen.
