Customers Provide New Opportunities By”Re-Purposing” Your Products

good idea jeff from goodbuyguys.comSeveral years ago we got a series of phone calls about this time of year from prospective customers who were interested in a product we sold,  bi-filament tape, but they wanted it in a much wider width than we offered.

This product is primarily sold for bundling of heavy objects like pipe and for sealing very heavy parcels.  We used it to seal large boxes of batteries and decided we might as well offer it to customers, especially since we found it so useful.

Bi-filament tape is expensive, even in the standard two inch width, and these callers were looking for it in a six inch wider version.  They only wanted a roll or two, and we weren’t really interested in investing in a product when we didn’t really understand how it was being used.

It turns out these callers were interested in building hexayurts (we knew nothing about this type of shelter) for Burning Man, an event that we had never heard of.

Skip forward three years and we now find that six inch bi-filament tape is a steady seller and we are involved with lots of very interesting people who are engaged with hexayurt development.

What happened?  We took a minute to listen to the callers.  Taking the time to understand what a hexayurt was and how it was assembled was all that was necessary for us to decide to stock bi-filament tape in six inch widths.
