How Many More Ways Can They Miss The Point

spokesperson for goodbuyguys.comThe stage collapse at the Indiana State Fair continues to work its way through the legal system, with yet another opportunity to increase stage safety squandered.

A judge who is overseeing a number of aspects of the case has now demanded a deposition from Jennifer Nettles, the lead singer of the band, Sugarland, that was scheduled to appear on the fair stage right before it collapsed.

Dragging  a performer into court over an issue like this is a little like asking a truck driver to testify about the details of the construction of a highway after an accident.  The performers are not in a position to know anything about stage construction, and they should not be expected to.

Bands working at this level in our industry have crews of technical people who are expected to be able to know when a stage is appropriate for their act and those crews count on the local stage contractors to actually do the work and take responsibility for it.

Until those responsible for really learning something from this terrible accident get the lawyers and insurance companies out of the way and start looking forward instead of backward, there is not going to be any improvement in stage safety.

A year of finger pointing has gotten us no where, and that does not appear to be changing.
