Why The Arts Won’t Be Exempt

spokesguyIf you think that those who work in the arts field or in businesses that provide support for the arts will be exempt from the economic downturn?  Think again!

I recently came across this article in the The Daily Tar Heel, the newspaper of my alma mater, UNC Chapel Hill. The article quotes Emil Kang, UNC’s Executive Director for the Arts.  UNC arts programs have been valued customers of ours for many years.

Here’s what Mr. Kang had to say:

If you talk to anyone who manages a budget they’ll tell you that they’re worried.  The arts sector, like most sectors that are not financial markets, are always lagging behind. I’m included; we’re worried.”

“We are at the mercy of people’s disposable income. Unfortunately the arts are about six months behind,” he said. “I think we are going to see a lot of worse news over the next couple of years.”

Those arts organizations that count on private donations and government appropriated funds for their core support are already planning fewer shows for upcoming seasons.  Donations from patrons and foundations are falling off and their return will trail the recovery of the economy as a whole.

Most arts funding not directly related to ticket sales is usually appropriated a least a year in advance, giving a false sense that the arts are not facing the same sort of downturn as General Motors and DHL.

Recent closing of Broadway hits like Hairspray and Legally Blonde reflect the current softness in ticket sales, sales that come almost exclusively from people’s discretionary income. Poor  sales for this year’s touring productions of shows like The Radio City Christmas Spectacular and Backyardigans will slowly and surely filter down to those who are employed in the arts and to the businesses that count on the arts for much of their sales.

If you make your living in the arts or derive a significant portion of your income from arts organizations, get ready.  Rough seas are on the horizon.

Hard To Feel Too Bad About This Downsizing

spokesguy American Express announced today of their intention to reduce their work force by 10%, shedding 7000 jobs over the next year.  It’s rarely good to hear about job cuts, and the current downturn in our economy is impacting everybody.

Still, a company as unresponsive and unconcerned about their merchant members as Amex probably needs to trim way back. After all, their 2007 profits were only $3.7 billion!

Maybe those whose jobs survive will show a little more interest in providing good customer service.

You may not be aware that when you place an order at goodbuyguys.com and pay with your American Express card, Amex takes almost 3% of the transaction off the top before they pay the merchant you made the purchase from.  This is a fee they earn in addition to any interest you may pay in carrying a balance from month to month.

While the merchant does get fairly quick payment (4-5 days), the impact of losing a 3% fee has a serious effect on what you pay.  It has to be reflected in the price.

If you have a rewards card that gives you a cash rebate, that rebate comes from the merchant, not from Amex.  Again, if the credit card company is going to give you money back, the merchant you made  your purchase from must factor that rebate into the price of what you purchase.

In exchange for these fees (American Express merchant fees are higher than both Mastercard and Visa) AMEX consistently makes things as complicated as they possibly can for the merchant, making their fee structure almost impossible to interpret.

If you challenge a charge on your card (even if it is valid) AMEX can charge the merchant as much as $20.00 in something called a “chargeback” fee for the merchant to prove the charge is valid, even if they have done nothing wrong.

American Express’s new initiative to cut employee jobs is intended to save the company $1.8 billion dollars in costs in 2009.

Think any of that savings will be passed on to the merchants that keep the company alive?  Don’t count on it!

Don’t Like Going To The Dentist? Just Chew On Duct Tape!

battery bob A recent article in Science News reveals an amazing tape fact.  The simple act of unwinding a roll of tape generates X-Rays.  Not just a few random rays-enough to actually expose a piece of dental x-ray film!

Scientists at UCLA were able to build a simple tape unrolling machine that generated enough X-ray bursts to actually image one of the technicians’ finger bones on an dental photographic plate.

This phenomenon is not completely understood nor is apparent that there is any commercial application for such technology.  A charge is generated when the tape is peeled off the roll.  Sudden jerking of the tape seems to cause electrons in the tape to give off energy in the form of protons.  A slight glow is even generated.

Next time your flashlight batteries go dead, maybe you just need to unwind (really quickly) a roll of duct tape.

Don’t Forget To Water Your Par Cans

spokesguy There are lots of very exciting things happening in the development of new lighting technologies.  The desire to save energy and use fewer natural resources in lighting manufacturing means that big changes are right around the corner.

General Electric is developing LED lighting technology that makes use of organic compounds that are incorporated into light emitting diodes or OLEDs.  This technology still has lots of problems to solve, but it actually works in the lab.

Sheets of plastic film containing OLEDs  emit a blue-white glow when an electric current is applied.  Because these sheets are flexible, it may be possible someday to  have your wallpaper or ceiling also be your light source.

The OLED panels provide a diffuse lighting source that doesn’t need lamp shades or frosting like a conventional tungsten filament light bulb.  GE and Siemens are already working with manufacturers of devices like cell phones and televisions, even though the cost is still far too great to be practical.  That, no doubt, will surely change.

Meanwhile, anybody who has watched their electrical meter spin at dizzying speeds when all the lights are on, has better days to look forward to.

Customer Service At Lightning Speed

mike2 This blog seems to continually find its way back customer service issues, and I guess that it really is a passion of mine.  Unfortunately, most of my postings address negative customer service issues, but I really enjoy having such a positive experience that it demands to be acknowledged.

I recently had to return my daughter’s digital camera, an Olympus FE230, for service.  She has  become quite a good photographer and was concerned that her camera suddenly seemed to only take”out of focus” photos.

She located Olympus’s online site for customer service and repairs and we shipped the camera off to an Olympus service center.  I’ve been through this sort of thing before, and I was prepared for the usual fist fight-slow or no service, warranty claim denied, six week wait, etc.

I shipped the camera on Monday.  Today is Thursday and she has the camera back in her hands.  That’s right!  In less than 72  the camera had gotten to the service center, been repaired, and returned to us.  They had even made sure that the memory card she mistakenly left in the camera was returned.

In an age when consumer electronics have become disposable items, its great to find a company that stands behind its products and understands how to build customer loyalty.

I’m guessing that there will be something from Olympus under our Christmas tree.

Is There A Place For Us In The Green Theatre Initiative?

spokesguy I recently came across an interesting article in Stage Directions magazine and it leads to a discussion that we need to be a part of.

The article, by Mike Lawler, features Gideon Banner of the Green Theatre Initiative .  It is one that anybody involved in using or selling expendables to the theatre industry needs to pay attention to.

To date, the green theatre movement has primarily focused on infrastructure and on conservation.  Its great that new theatre facilities building is taking into consideration concepts like solar lighting, water conversation, and environmentally sustainable construction techniques.  Unfortunately, it takes generations for these sorts of changes to work their way through the system.  Theatre buildings last for decades, and quite often they are not able to easily be upgraded in an environmentally responsible way, even if funding is available.

More immediate results can be realized from simple conservation techniques.  Upgrading lighting fixtures to LED technology, using more efficient sound system components and addressing wasteful uses of energy and water are something that every theatre facility can address every day.

My concern, honestly, is how this green movement will impact our own business.  It is regrettable that the nature of expendables means that a lot of what we sell will end up in the landfill at the end of the show.  You can’t reuse tape, and rechargeable battery technology has not reached the point where sound techs are willing to trust them in wireless microphones.

We are always on the lookout for reusable solutions for cable management and we are working with Sanyo on their Eneloop rechargeable battery line in hopes of offering this product to our customers who buy batteries for wireless mics.

We are anxious to be part of the dialog and I welcome your comments.

The “Gateway” To Customer Service

spokesguy They say “write about what you know “.  Well, after years of dealing with telephone-based customer service in our business, I like to think this is something I know a little bit about.

My most recent foray into bad customer service started yesterday when I got an email from our web developer, indicating that there might have been some unauthorized activity in a developer account linked to our online catalog.  We live and die by the performance of goodbuyguys.com, so this was an issue that needed to be addressed immediately.

I contacted our credit card transaction gateway company, authorizenet.com , confident that the possibility that there might have been thousands of dollars in unauthorized transactions in a test account would grab their immediate attention.

Boy, was I wrong!

Instead, what I got was a rude customer service representative who refused to identify himself with a first and last name, refused to provide his phone number, and refused to refer me directly to a security specialist who might be able to address my concerns. Clearly, the fact that we had been a customer of their company for many years was of absolutely no interest to him.  Neither was there any interest on his part to the possibility that fraudulent activity was underway.

It is hard to know how we came to the point where customer service reps are instructed to not give callers (even customers) their names and contact numbers.  Do they really expect us to believe that their supervisors don’t have telephones or that we, as customers, can only request assistance through a web site?

Today our web developer is shopping for a new gateway.

Podcast Like It’s 1949

spokesguy We know that Edward R. Murrow never filed a podcast, but if he had, this is what he would have used.

sony_retro_mic.jpg

The Sony Retro Wireless USB  has a great classic mic look, but is designed to be used with a USB interface on your computer.  Not only is it designed to be used with a USB port, its wireless!

You can use this mic anywhere within a 10 foot radius of your computer without any cables to trip over.  It uses RFI technology and is designed to work with all current Windows and Mac operating systems.  Best of all no special drivers are needed for use with Windows computers.  It even has an on/off switch.

alan_sings.jpg

If your podcasting has advanced to the point where your computer’s onboard mic no longer gets the job done, or you just love the idea of “walking the walk while you talk the talk” then this mic is just what you need.

Making The Case For AN XLR Patch Bay

mike2 We used to do lots of church and auditorium sound system installations and many times, some sort of a patch bay was called for. While including a patch bay in an installation can be both expensive and time consuming, it is always worth the trouble, even in a simple installation.

The industry standard for audio patch bays uses quarter inch connectors or something similar called “TT” tt.jpg(“TT” stands for “tiny telephone”) a standard left over from when telephone systems used physical switchboards. Early sound system patch bays actually used hardware intended for the phone company.

tt_patch_bay.jpg

We quickly realized that using the “TT” standard, even though it was embraced by console manufacturers and recording hardware makers, was not the best solution for the job.

While not universally accepted for patch bays, using the XLR standard for these patch bays was a much better solution. It’s hard to come up with a connector design better than the XLR3 connector. It is durable. It can be used balanced (3 wire) or unbalanced (2 wire), it is readily available in places like Radio Shack, and it is inexpensive.

xlr_3.jpg

Best of all, it doesn’t require a different kind of cable from the other wires used in most sound system installations. If you have almost any kind of sound system, you are already using XLR3 cables, as these are what is used on almost all microphones.

We tried to include patch bays in several locations along an audio signals path (both inputs and outputs) so that rerouting, patching in temporary sound sources, routing signal to temporary output sources, etc. could be done without unpatching the primary console inputs and outputs.

Using XLR connectors allows you to pass both balanced and unbalanced signals, including phantom power when necessary and use standard XLR “barrel” type adapters like ground lifts and isolation transformers. The “TT” standard does not allow for any of these adaptations.

XLR cables can be patched together “head to tail” to make as long a cable as you need. XLR cables are available in short lengths for standard patch bay use, but any size XLR microphone cable can be used.

Unlike a two pole or three pole “TT” connector, the XLR3 connector can be patched without having to pass the tip of the connector through the ring(s) of the mating female connector. The likelihood of annoying and possibly damaging “pops” and “cracks” is greatly reduced.

Need to trace a signal? Standard tone generators and cable testers can be used with the XLR patch panel without any adapters. None of this can be done with a “TT” patch panel.

tone_generator.jpgnadycabletester3.gif

If you really want flexibility in your sound system installation XLR is the way to go.

Wireless Warriors Step It Up A Notch!

mike2 The interest in acquiring the broadcast spectrum currently used by many professional quality wireless microphones has been raging for a while.  Everyone knows that some changes will take place in February 2009, when the FCC reallocates some of the spectrum in the 700 mhz range.

I have written before regarding these licensing requirements and speculated at the time that the FCC could really make things chaotic for the entertainment industry. Get ready for a new player to turn up the heat!

As reported in Forbes, The Public Interest Spectrum Coalition, a coalition of consumer’s rights organizations has filed a complaint with the FCC regarding the failure of almost all wireless mic owners to obtain an operator’s license for what is essentially a low power radio transmitter.  This complaint accuses manufacturers like Shure and AKG of deceptive advertising in how their products are marketed.

This is a complaint that could potentially impact millions of microphone owners.

More importantly, it makes a very powerful argument on behalf of those companies that are vying for use of this part of the broadcast spectrum when digital televison comes online in February 0f 2009.

Bids of as much as $19 billion dollars have been placed for access to these airwaves and lots of major players are vying for the space.

While the FCC has rarely, if ever, enforced the licensing requirements for wireless mics, the law is not new and it may not be possible to ignore it any longer.
