Every summer at about this time, we see a spike in sales of bifilament tape, a product primarily used for bundling and packaging heavy items. It is a vinyl tape with fiberglass reinforcing threads which run at right angles all through the tape. It is strong, does not stretch and is impossible to break.
It appears that this tape has become the product of choice for folks headed to Burningman, the two week arts festival held every year in Nevada. Many “burners”, as the festival attendees are known, build temporary shelters called hexayurts for housing while they are at the festival. The bifilament tape is used to seam together the panels that make up the yurt, since they are designed to fold flat and be assembled on site.
In an attempt to accommodate Canadians who are attending the festival and building hexayurts, we have tried to suspend our “U.S. only” shipping policy, since there are apparently no Canadian based distributors of bifilament tape.
Regrettably, our attempts to reach across the border have been a dismal failure. Between having to deal with the U.S. Post Office, Canadian customs and various tariff and export rules, it is all but impossible to get anything into a Canadian customers hands in a timely manner at a reasonable cost.
Obviously, there are many ongoing problems with the European Central Union, but the aidea of neighboring countries being able to do business with a common currency and open borders is one that would serve the United States and Canada well.
In a time when the U.S. is desperately seeking new markets in order to hang on to its manufacturing base, it seems ridiculous to be looking towards Europe or South America when we are unable to easily do business with a neighbor with whom we share a border, a common language and a shared heritage.
