Selling The User Experience

good idea jeff from buytape.comWe love a web site called Bestmadeco.com.  It is run by a well known designer named Peter Buchanan, and started out selling, of all things, axes with hand painted handles.

The axes quickly took on the cachet of  being works of art (how many collectors actually use axes?) and having something with hand work done by Mr. Buchanan brought real value to the item.

Best Made has gone on to market lots of items that involve no personalized hand work, but they have managed to continue to get terrific price premiums by bringing high end user experiences to every day items.

This week’s item really caught my attention, as I was incredulous that you could bring some mystical experience to the act of sweeping dirt off your work bench.

The item is called “The Shop Brush” and is offered for sale for $28.00.

Apparently, Best Made is convinced that the experience of  feeling “the glide of natural bristles over a dusty surface” or “the soft swishing of particles into the dust pan” is something to be savored at any price.

On the other hand, if you just want to clean off your work bench and get on with your life you can buy an almost identical brush at Amazon.com for $12.99.
