I use the Google Alerts notification system in order to track information about our customers, products and vendors. It’s a great time saver and turns up a lot of unexpected information.

One of my alerts is set to the search phrase “extension cord“. Unfortunately, all too often this time of year these alerts also include the word “fire“.

Somehow, it seems that Christmas decorating and overloaded extension cords regularly make headline news. While it’s easy to understand how this can happen, it’s also easy to prevent.

All electrical devices (including lights and powered decorations) are required to be tagged with information relating to how much power they consume. This information is usually listed along with the term “watts”. When you plug multiple lights or electrical decorations into an extension cord, it is necessary to add the total number of watts (also known as “current draw”) to determine what size of extension cord is called for.

If this simple arithmetic is a little daunting, there is an easier way to figure out if there is a problem.

Plug everything in, turn all the decorations on, and hold the extension cord in your hand for three or four minutes. If the cord becomes warm to the touch, then it is overloaded. Remove one or more of the items plugged into it and try again.

If you can’t reduce the current draw, then you need to increase the size (known as the “gauge” of the cable). This can be a little confusing, as the smaller the gauge number, the higher the current carrying capacity of the extension cord. That is, a 14 gauge cord has a lower current carrying capacity than a 12 gauge cord.

Finally, even if you don’t have an overloaded extension cord, running it under a rug or behind a wall can still create a fire hazard if air can’t circulate and remove any heat build up. It should be left out in the open.

Take a minute to plan before you begin holiday decorating. I don’t want to be reading about you in Google Alerts.

We have a great line of extension cords intended for heavy duty use. They use 12 gauge cable which gives them a 20 amp capacity, but we can’t really call them 20 amp cables because of the connectors that we use.

This has led to more than a little confusion among our customers.

Here’s why.

If you are familiar with standard wall outlets, you are probably aware that there are two different versions of outlets that look almost identical.

The standard 15 amp duplex receptacle (wall outlet) has openings for two parallel blades and a semi-circular ground prong. This has been standard for almost 50 years.

An almost identical version of this outlet has an additional slot set at a right angle as part of the parallel blade opening on one side.

If the outlet has this additional right angle slot, it is intended not just 15 amp service, but 20 amp service as well.

A true 20 amp connector (male) on an extension cord will have, not two parallel blades, but rather two blades set at right angles to each other. Otherwise they are identical. Same size connector body, same size blades, same everything else.

15 Amp(Nema 5-15)

20 Amp (Nema 5-20)

If we sold our “20 amp” extension cords with a 20 amp rated connector, they it would only plug into the version of the wall outlet that is designed to accomodate both types of blades.

20 Amp Wall Outlet(Nema 5-20)

While we are confident that the product we sell is designed to handle a true 20 amp load, in order to truly rate an extension cord as being “20 amps” it must have one of its connector blades at right angles to the other.

This article speculated that a lot of the Chinese buying was a stockpiling of material for which China’s manufacturers had no real demand. If that’s true, then the Chinese buying binge may be over.

This may well explain the recent downturn in copper prices after a steady rise over the last six months. This rise made little sense in light of the overall worldwide decline in manufacturing. If this downturn is real, it could be a harbinger for lots of commodity price reductions.

Why do we care? The cost of extension cords (copper and rubber), mic stands (steel and aluminum), tape (cotton, oil and chemicals) and batteries (tin plate and many minerals) are all tied to world commodity prices.

Lets hope that if this recent reversal in commodity prices is real, that we will see it passed through to the products we sell.

There are lots of very exciting things happening in the development of new lighting technologies. The desire to save energy and use fewer natural resources in lighting manufacturing means that big changes are right around the corner.

General Electric is developing LED lighting technology that makes use of organic compounds that are incorporated into light emitting diodes or OLEDs. This technology still has lots of problems to solve, but it actually works in the lab.

Sheets of plastic film containing OLEDs emit a blue-white glow when an electric current is applied. Because these sheets are flexible, it may be possible someday to have your wallpaper or ceiling also be your light source.

The OLED panels provide a diffuse lighting source that doesn’t need lamp shades or frosting like a conventional tungsten filament light bulb. GE and Siemens are already working with manufacturers of devices like cell phones and televisions, even though the cost is still far too great to be practical. That, no doubt, will surely change.

Meanwhile, anybody who has watched their electrical meter spin at dizzying speeds when all the lights are on, has better days to look forward to.

With my background in pro sound, I was familiar with both the quarter inch standard , and the Canon EP multipin standard. I had never seen the XLR used for speaker cables. I quickly became a convert. Here’s why.

Because speaker cables with XLR connectors have a male connector on one end and a female on the other, its easy to extend the length of a cable without an adapter. Not using an adapter means not losing an adapter. This is a really valuable feature when doing long outdoor speaker cable runs.

Each pin in an XLR3 connector is rated at 15 amps. That’s more than enough current carrying capacity for most practical amplifier outputs.

The flexible strain relief boot on an XLR connector is flexible enough to handle 2 conductor 14 gauge, or even 12 gauge cable.

Each pin makes independent contact with the mating connector, unlike a quarter inch connector where the tip must make contact with the sleeve before it mates with the tip.

Finally the solid, easy to use locking mechanism on the XLR3 means that no additional securing of a connection is necessary when cables are linked together.

A couple of amplifier manufacturers adopted this standard back in the 1980’s, but they let it fall by the wayside when the industry as a whole failed to sign up.

On more than one occasion, I must admit that I used a microphone cable as a temporary speaker cable when I ran out of speaker cables. Try that with a Speakon cable!

It is something of a stretch for me to go from selling audio visual supplies to watching the commodity markets. Unfortunately, volatility in the base components of everything we sell means that this vital information just can’t be ignored.

Between the price of the petroleum derivatives in tape adhesives and the cost of trucking these very heavy products, the cost of oil impacts the cost of every kind of tape we sell. There has been some short term moderation in the price of a barrel of oil, so we are hoping that our suppliers can hold the line a little longer. It is hard to connect the price of filling up your car with what you pay for a roll of gaffers tape, but the connection is real.

After peaking at $4.00 a pound in April, the price of copper is down about 10%, closing at just over $3.60 earlier in the week. As our cable business expands, the cost of the most important, and heaviest component, in an extension cord or speaker cable has forced suppliers to raise prices several times this year. Maybe those increases are over for a little while. Hopefully, this decrease in will help battery makers hold the line as well

Unfortunately, it seems like what one market gives back, another takes away. Dow Chemical’s announcement that it will raise chemical prices by up to 20%, effective this month, is going to impact much of we sell. Tape adhesive resins, battery components and cable jackets all have chemical components, and even if Dow isn’t the supplier, most other major suppliers are sure to follow.

We are grateful to our loyal customers and will do all we can to work with major suppliers to address pricing pressure.

“Losing The Cords On Flat TVs”

Thinking this AP article might be about extension cords, I read a little before realizing that the author, Peter Svensson was actually talking about the ability to send television data to a large screen TV wirelessly using technology similar to the WIFI signals now found distributing computer data in so many homes.

Three different wireless protocols for delivering data to flat panel televisions will be featured at next week’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. It uses recently allocated spectrum that is not supposed to interfere with WIFI and it has a range that reportedly will limit it from spilling into your neighbor’s apartment. This has the potential to make the home theatre installer’s life a lot easier.

Unfortunately, no where in the article did the writer even mention the most important cord of all. THE POWER CABLE! That certainly isn’t going to be lost anytime soon.

One of the most popular locations for large flat panel televisions is over the mantle. How many houses are built with an electrical outlet in the middle of the wall over the fireplace? Not many.

More importantly, while the installation of low voltage cabling for video and data can be safely installed by a hobbyist or homeowner, the installation of a 110volt electrical outlet needs to be done by a licensed electrician. Doing this installation in a space adjacent to a fireplace flue requires special cable and a lot a care to prevent creating a fire hazard.

LCD and plasma display video monitors use a lot of power, and ideally, the electrical outlets they are plugged into also need special surge protection to protect the TV from electrical surges. Providing power for such an expensive item shouldn’t be done as an afterthought.

Now, when flat TVs can lose the power cord, that’s an article I look forward to reading.

While there was a spare outlet (two, actually) available, the two power supplies already plugged into two of the four available outlets rendered the last two useless.

Whether you are dealing with duplex (two outlets) or quad (four outlets) the spacing of your wall outlets has not changed for decades. The space above or below (as well as side-to-side for quads) is still spaced like it was when houses and offices were built in the 1950’s. There are lots of devices designed to get around the problem, but they require additional components, complication and expense.

Since no single connector would ever plug into multiple outlets at the same time, there is absolutely no reason to continue to adhere to this standard. Why don’t wall outlets built into new buildings reflect the need to plug power supplies directly into the wall without covering adjacent outlets? It wouldn’t prevent any devices currently in use from being plugged in, but would accomodate all the devices we now use that require wall warts.

This is a great opportunity for those who market residential and commercial installed wiring devices to solve a problem, create added convenience for the end user, make a safer environment (fewer overload and trip hazards) and maybe even make a little more money themselves.

My experience with using personal computers goes back to the early 1980’s, so I’ve had more than my share of opportunities to set up, take down, reconfigure, and generally wander around computer peripheral cabling. The more I handle this stuff, the more mystified I get.

I began my career as a an audio techncian, and spent many years building, setting up, configuring, and repairing concert sound systems. People who design computer peripheral wiring could learn a lot from the audio industry.

While the performance and compatibility of computer peripherals continues to improve, the interconnections between these devices never catches up. I can’t think of a single data-type connector that comes close to matching the performance of the lowly audio XLR connector, a design that is well into its second half-century of use.

I just spent 15 frustrating minutes trying to replace a computer monitor in the office, only to be reminded that there are at least three (if not more) different pin configurations for a D-sub connector, even though they all have the same physical shell. Maybe, it’s just me, but I almost always have to try to plug in a USB connector at least two times, as there is nothing visible on the outside of the connector to indicate which end is up. I guess there are savings involved in making ethernet connectors with with almost useless plastic locking pins, but the savings quickly evaporate when you spend a half-hour trying to pry one out of a computer port after the release tab snaps off. The list goes on and on.

Audio connectors, on the other hand, are designed to be patched in the dark, repaired (when necessary) in the field, and to be common to hundreds and hundreds of different manufacturers equipment. The Shure SM57 microphone ( probably the most popular and common in the world) uses the same connector now as when it came to market in 1965. A 40 year old SM57 works with a brand new Chinese-made microphone cable right out of the box.

We’re depending more and more on computer-based devices all the time, and the portability designed into these items means that they are constantly having to be cabled and uncabled. Hopefully, manufacturers will consider adopting some connector standards that are up to the task.

In the rush to jump on the high definition television bandwagon, Honeywell has introduced an HDMI cable that they claim is “self healing”. According to Engadget, Honeywell’s CurexE cable has some sort of error coding built into it that uses inline LED’s to show whether the signal chain is transmitting the correct info to your HD device. It’s hard to understand how they can all the device “self healing” as it has no ability to address problems at either end of the the data transmission so it can’t really “heal” anything. At best, it can only diagnose what may be wrong with the components it connects. And that’s on a good day!

Frankly, this item looks like it was developed by the marketing department rather than engineering. Here’s how this product is described in Honeywell’s own press release:

“We’ve made this cable intelligent by integrating a chip into the connector that performs two major functions,” said David Coleman, Program Manager, CE Cable Products, Honeywell. “First, the chip’s line driver ‘cures’ corrupted HDCP and EDID data that can lead to serious audio and video artifacts. Second, we added ‘light’ in the form of LEDs embedded into the connector that let installers monitor the most critical elements of the HDMI interface for problems.”

The parentheses around “cure” are theirs and their description of the “cure” doesn’t really shed much light on this voodoo.

As the broadcast industry approaches the deadline of 2009’s conversion to digital television, a lot of consumers are going to be taken to the cleaners by televion accessory makers who bring very little value to the table. Honeywell’s CurexE cable looks like one of these offerings.

It’s always interesting to stumble upon a new type of customer for our products, and I have noticed recently that we are getting more and more orders from lawyers and courts. I had not thought much about it until I stumbled on this blog posting.

More and more lawyers offices and courts are struggling with the technical demands of media coverage and the need for tech savy technicians in the courtroom. Many courthouses date back to the earlier half of the twentieth century and they are woefully behind when it comes to providing the kind of support that is now expected by the legal profession, the media and the public. Its not unusual to enter a courtroom now and find mic cables and extension cords held down with gaffers tape all over the room. If the proceedings are high profile, this tangle of cables may stream out the door, down the stairs and out into the street.

The need for audio visual supplies now often extends back to the attorneys’ offices as well. Many law firms have whole departments that are involved in preparing presentation materials for courtroom work. This now extends far beyond the realm of flip charts to include professionally produced videos, wireless mics, enhanced audio recordings and computer-based presentations.

While it is unfortunate that these technical demands may be overwhelming the courtroom, its a great thing that high tech tools are available to participants in the cases.

GoodBuyGuys.com is your online source for Shurtape gaffers tape, Duracell Procell batteries, MagLite flashlights, Nashua duct tape, Bay State wire ties, Electratrac and Coast Wire extension cords and OnStage Stand mic stands. Look to us first to meet your audio visual supply needs.

If you carry a cell phone, you know how easy it is to receive calls, no matter where you are. Your phone number works all over the country. Folks who use VOIP phone services like Skype and Vonage can plug their internet phones in almost anywhere in the world and get calls on their local phone number.

Justin Timberlake’s Future Sex/Loveshow has taken the concept of staying connected to a new level. As reported in the July 2007 edition of PLSN magazine, the Timberlake summer tour is saving thousand of dollars on telco costs by carrying its own internet based phone system.

WANetics LLC is providing the hardware and technical expertise that lets the Future Sex/Loveshow skip the costs of having the venue provide expensive temporary phone service and hardware. Not only do they not incur local telecommunications expenses, but details like phone and fax number remain unchanged, regardless of where the tour is performing.

Each of the tours five departments (promoter, production, accounting, crew and tour management) has its own dedicated road case that accomodates phones, cables, a fax machine, batteries, wifi and an ethernet switch. All voice and data services are provided through a broadband internet connection and then distributed on a frequency that will travel well throughout the production area of the venue and will not interfere with WIFI frequencies.

According to the PLSN article, the tour reported that voice quality was excellent and that overall service was good even in venues where internet quality was less than perfect. Best of all, the whole system worked no matter what part of the world they were in. The system even provided special phone capabilities like voicemail and conferencing.

Personally, after having paid lots of these telco bills myself while working as a promoters rep, I’m not shedding any tears for the local phone companies that will lose this revenue stream. They consistently overcharged and underperformed.

Look for this service to become the standard for large touring organizations of all sorts in the near future.

We’ve been trying, with some success, to establish an Ebay presence for some time. Our Ebay store, BuyMicStand, has had some limited sales success and I guess we will stick with it for awhile longer. The difficulty of posting. selling, communicating with customers, etc. is so harder on Ebay than running your own ecommerce site with a shopping cart that is difficult to understand Ebay’s success. We’ll probably eventually add items like mic stands and extension cords, but it is so difficult to do that I keep putting it off.

I guess that if you have only a single item to sell or you only sell occasionally, then an auction site makes some sense. But Ebay stores are entirely different. They almost always use the “Buy It Now” concept, so there is no real auction going on, and the fees that Ebay forces you to add in order to list your product are far beyond those that are necessary if you run your own shopping cart.

There is so much information pushed at a merchant who is trying to manage his online store, that you sometimes feel like you are going to go blind trying to find the link you need to manage one aspect of the store. The user interface is rarely updated and the result is that Ebay pages are so stuffed with images and text that it is impossible to focus on any one thing. This may be okay if you are shopping, but if you are a merchant, its different. You should be able to link to a page where primary merchant functions like adding an item or adjusting a price can be done without having to seek these functions out among others like “Eligible for Relist Fee Credit” and “Change my cross-promotion preferences“. These may be useful tools for power sellers but they shouldn’t be given equal status with user functions like “Sell My Item“.

Ebay has continued to maintain its dominance for online sales but they are ripe to be challenged by someone who does it better.

When someone like Proco creates a really useful guide like “How To Choose The Right Cable“, then we are happy to link to it, even though we sell a competing brand of mic cables.

Rather than try to keep our potential customers away from competitors content, we’ll jump at the chance to provide our customers with good information, regardless of the source.

The challenge is, of course, to create new and useful content of our own that doesn’t simply restate the information that another web site has already provided.

I’ve got a lot of work to do!

GoodBuyGuys.com is your online source for Permacel gaffers tape, MagLite flashlights, Procell Batteries, Nashua duct tape, Bay State wire ties, Electratrac and Entertainment 1 extension cords, OnStage Stand mic stands , and, now, Hosatech microphone cables.

The article was about a product that can wirelessly transmit power for recharging to any device that is equipped with a special Powercast module. While this device doesn’t have the ability to transmit large amounts of current like the wireless extension cord promised, it does have great potential for ridding us of all the cables needed for recharging our wireless devices.

Powercast has been nameda “Best of CES 2007″ designation from this year’s Consumer Electronics Show, so I guess that this one is not a hoax.

A device like a cell phone or an MP3 player which has the powercast module included can communicate and receive power from is charger wirelessly via radio waves. Products enabled with Powercast Technology will make it to the marketplace before the end of the year.

This technology has generated lots of interest in the tech publications industry. Popular Electronics says that Powercast is capable of delivering up to two watts of power, using transmissions in the 915 megahertz range. Power can be transmitted over a range as great as 10 feet and multiple devices can be charged (each with its own Powercast) at the same time. Its even considered safe enough for you to charge your cell phone while it is in your pocket.

While there doesn’t seem to be any device that can replace the extension cord on the horizon, the prospect of getting rid of all those little cables attached to device chargers is really intriguing. Battery chargers are really hard to keep organized, so the concept that each device might be able to keep track of its own charger, without the user constantly plugging and unplugging could be a real boon to the growth of wireless, battery powered devices.

I hope my new theme song is “He won’t get fooled again“.

GoodBuyGuys.com is your online source for Permacel gaffers tape, MagLite flashlights, Nashua duct tape, Bay State wire ties, Electratrac and Coast Wire extension cords, OnStage Stand mic stands , and batteries for lots of wireless devices

It started when I googled “extension cord” to see how we were doing with that search engine. Much to my surprise, one of the page one search results took me to ThinkGeek for an ariticle about “wireless extension cords.” That’s right. WIRELESS EXTENSION CORDS!

When much of your business is based on cables and the tape that is used to temporarily affix them to the floor, then a concept like this is pretty scary.

I immediately sent a link to this article to one of our resident gadget geeks and asked him if he thought that this was possible. His analysis was “possible, yes” “safe, no.” He even referenced some work by Nikola Tesla from the late 19th century to support his opinion.

While it does appear that common household current could be turned into microwaves and transmitted wirelessly, it would create all sorts of electrical havoc, as well as more than a little risk for anyone who got in the signal’s path.

I couldn’t resist doing a little more research and found that lots of gadget oriented web sites like digg.com and the daily giz whiz had picked up on this article as well. Everyone had an opinion.

When I realized that the price for this potentially revolutionary consumer device was only $34.99, I couldn’t resist so I clicked on “Add To Cart”. Instead of a confirmation of my order, here’s what I got:

You can file this device under “wish I’d thought of it first“. Monster Cable, the company known for its high end (and high priced) audio cable has released their “Outlets To Go Power Strip“, a stripped down, light weight version of the “found under every desk” AC power outlet strip. This device is designed for travelers who run out of outlets in their hotel room or airport boarding lounge, but don’t want to lug around a full sized outlet strip.

I came across this device while listening to one of my favorite podcasts, The Daily Giz Whiz from TWIT.TV. They review an interesting new tech gadget almost every day.

Monster has managed to use half the plastic and half the cable and sell the device for twice the price of the original. They tout their FlatProfile Plug and FlatWrap Cord (both trademarked names) as making this device the perfect tote-along for power hungry road warriors. That there is a need for this device is unquestioned. The $29.95 price (about 4 times what you’d pay for a standard 6 outlet strip at Wal Mart), is another matter entirely.

Monster has done an amazing job of using their branding strategy to convince people that a wire isn’t just a wire. There has been an ongoing debate for years in the audiophile community about whether Monster Cables, particulary their speaker cables, improves sound quality. Regardless of how you might feel about that argument, the Outlets To Go strategy has nothing to do with wire quality or audio signal flow improvement. It does, however, give them the power to charge almost $30.00 for their better mousetrap.

I usually agree with the opinions voice at The Daily Giz Whiz, but I’m afraid they are willing to pay too much for not enough.

GoodBuyGuys.com is your online source for Permacel gaffers tape, Duracell Procell batteries, MagLite flashlights, Nashua duct tape, Bay State wire ties, Electratrac and Coast Wire extension cords, OnStage Stand mic stands, and lots of other power distribution products..

Taking the time to research customer queries has been a great way to grow our business.

Today, we got a call from someone who needed extension cords to use in large walk-in freezers. The cables he was using were freezing and could no longer be coiled. It was easy to understand his problem, but not quite so easy to find the solution.

If you have ever taken the time to look closely at an extension cord, you’ll see that there is a lot of difficult-to-decipher information printed on or embossed into the cable. This information tells you what environments the cable is designed to be used in and the amount of current that it is safely rated to carry.

Putting this info directly on the cable is required if Underwriters Laboratory is going to give the item its blessing as something safe for consumers to use. Here’s a useful link to safety info from UL about extension cords and how they are rated.

In doing a little research for this customer I came across a very nice diagram of how extension cords are made and the characteristics that give each type of cable its unique rating. Here’s a link.

It turns out that the info our customer needed is included in a 3-5 digit code found on all extension cords. The code is assigned by the National Electrical Code and the data in question usually starts with the letter “S”.

If you want to know a little more, click here.

Anyway, it turns out our customer is going to need a cable with a jacket specification of SJEOW. The “O” in this code means that the cable has a thermoplastic jacket (flexible at low temperatures) and the “W” means that it is rated for outdoor use. Extension cords with this rating will remain flexible down to -45 degrees F.

You don’t usually think of car batteries as expendables, but it looks like that is changing. An interesting article in this weeks Wall Street Journal talks about how the demands of today’s electronic-laden cars are taking a real toll on their batteries. A car battery has traditionally lasted 3-5 years but the addition of power sapping devices like DVD players, GPS systems, heated cup holders and security systems has radically altered the life of these batteries.

The design of the auto battery is little changed in decades and what we ask these batteries to do was never imagined 10 years ago. It used to be that about the only thing that used power when the car was shut off was the clock. Now all sorts of items from the cooling fan to your cell phone charger continue to use power long after the car has been parked.

Experts in battery maintenance recommend that the battery be disconnected when the vehicle is parked for more than a couple of weeks. Better yet, use a device called a “trickle charger” to keep the battery charged up even when the car is not being used. These same experts warn that the biggest threats to battery life, extreme weather and harsh vibtration, can’t be avoided.

With the cost of a replacement battery sometimes exceeding $200.oo a little thought given to battery mainteance can go a long way.

The clock is being set forward three weeks earlier this year and some confusion is probably in order.

One thing you don’t want to be confused about is the need to change your smoke detector battery. Using the time change as a reminder to change these batteries twice a year is a great idea, and the date change doesn’t diminish the need to attend to this important task. It takes just a minute and its easy to do.

Lots of new residential construction uses hard wired smoke detectors and some homeowners don’t realize that these detectors need battery changes too! The battery provides a backup in case there is a power failure. Quite often an electrical fire can lead to a quick shutdown of your electrical service, leaving the smoke detector without a fresh battery useless. Just because the LED indicator on the smoke detector is glowing doesn’t mean that the battery is good.

A battery that is no longer adequate for your smoke detector may still have enough power to use in other non-critical applications. Try it in some other device before throwing it away.

I often joke that I have coiled enough cable to get to the moon and back. Turns out that I was exaggerating just a little. It appears that it would take about 30 million 50 foot mic cables just to get there. In case you were wondering, its about 284,000 miles to the moon.

Why this sudden interest in proving myself wrong? We’ll, I just came across a device that might have kept me from retiring from the sound business. It’s the Kaltman Cable Coiler. If this thing really works, it would be pretty cool. It is a battery powered device that is designed to coil a 50 foot microphone cable in under 10 seconds. All without kinking or binding.

My first question is how does this device deal with the natural twist in a cable that comes from how the conductors inside the cable jacket are twisted. Both the conductors and the shield have a twist in them and this is why using the under and over style of cable coiling is so important for cable life. The natural twist in the cable is the reason that a good cable can be ruined so quickly if you wrap the coil around your arm instead of using proper coiling techniques.

It also appears from the short video at their site that it is necessary to have all your cables laid out in a manner where they are completely untangled in order to use the coiler properly. This could take a lot of stage space in a venue where you might have 30 or 4o mic cables, all mixed in with extension cords, speaker cables, video cable, etc.

Still, the idea of having a machine do all your cable coiling is intriguing. We are going to contact Kaltman in hopes of getting one to evaluate. I’ll let you know what we find out.

Well, New Year’s Day has come and gone, so its time to pack away the decorations for another year. Its always really tempting to just stuff them in plastic bags and pitch them into the garage, but I’ve come to realize that I will really regret that next December.

We’ve got some great products to help organize this stuff and it helps assure that next year won’t start out with having to unwind a tangled mess.

We’ve to Velcro One Wrap Straps on all our extension cords and by using these and taking a few extra minutes to coil them all up carefully, they are ready to use next holiday season. I use different colors for coding different lengths.

Nothing tangles worse than strings of mini lights (we use about 100 strands) so I secure these with nylon wire ties. A bag of 500 costs only $15.99 and that’s enough for several seasons.

Items like wreaths and garland are tied up with tie line and its great for bundling together items with lots of different parts. It has a soft texture, so it won’t damage or mar the surfaces of what you bundle with it.

Finally, when all the ornaments are stuffed into plastic bins, quick labeling with paper label tape and a Sharpie Marker means that I can quickly find what I need next year.

By the way, don’t forget to remove the batteries from any battery powered decorations. Duracell Procell batteries have a long shelf life and a good manufacturers warranty, but that warranty might not cover corrosion damage if there is a problem.

Time to get back to work.

I was finishing up my Christmas decorating last night and got to the end of my supply of extension cords before I finished the job. I had to dig deep into the cable archives and came across some power cable I had put together for a nightclub installation we had done 30 YEARS AGO!

Someone (probably not me) had taken the time and care to properly “under and over” coil these, tie them up with tie line and store them in a dark road case. I couldn’t believe what great shape they were in. I put them to use right away and didn’t burn the house down-at least not yet!

I thnk the two secrets to the longevity of these cables was that they were stored where no sun light would shine on them, thus no uv radiation to break down the jacket, and, more importantly, they were properly coiled. Any stranded wire (these were fine strands of copper) has a natural twist that needs to be respected when the cables are coiled. Coiling or wrapping them against this twist (e.g. wrapping them around your arm and hand) will quickly lead to permanent kinks and eventually cause enough of the individual strands to break down. Conductivity is reduced, heat is generated and, eventually the cable can get hot enough to melt the jacket.

Next time you have a new extension cord, take the time to coil it properly with an under/over looping method and it will last a long, long time.

A good portion of our live event production work involved providing amplification of live television events for audiences. It was exciting work and live television was a real challenge. I loved it.

We still occasionally do this sort of work and I had a recent ephiphany about something that had always bothered me these events.

No matter how “high end” the video production company we were working with, they would constantly string orange and yellow extension cords all over the event site. Everything else in their equipment package was always top quality, but all their power cables looked like they were pulled off the shelves at Home Depot. It was the sort of thing that you would never see in a theatrical or concert setting.

It finally dawned on me that these vidiots could only see what the camera saw. Any cable that was invisible to the lens (read-the director) was invisible to them. They really had no interest in what the live audience saw. Their audience was the television audience and if the cable couldn’t bee seen through the lens, these guys assumed that it was invisible.

One of reasons for starting buyextensioncords.com was because it was so difficult to find high quality, well made extension cords. We offer heavy gauge (12 GA) cables, medium gauge (14GA) cables and Electratrac MultiOutlet cables, all in black.

If you want to be sure that your power cables are all but invisible to the audience, then “its gotta be black“.

Got an observation to share with our readers? Pass it along.

His company offers computer training courses all over the country by sending technicians to a local site and teaching the course in a hotel meeting room. The business is growing fast and they offer seminars all over the country.

One of the most complicated parts of this mobile classroom concept is actually setting up and wiring the computers so that every participant in the class has their own work station. He needed lots of outlets, even though his total power consumption was not all that high.
One of his classes was visited recently by the local fire marshall who threatened to shut the class down because the extension cord arrangement being used did not meet local codes.

He was inquiring about the potential suitability of the Electratrac MultiOutlet cable for this use. I could almost hear his sigh of relief when I assured him that these cables were exactly what he needed and that they would pass the fire marshall’s inspection regimen. They are UL approved, have high quality jackets and meet all codes for temporary wiring.
I suggested that the begin his setup with a 12 gauge cable. If he needs more outlets, he can reduce to a 14 gauge cable as he gets closer to the end of his outlet chain. That saves a little money and weight. Adding additional cables is clean and simple, because each Electratrac Cable has a handy outlet on its end.

If you try this, you will need to do some quick and simple math. Each computer, or other device, will show its power consumption on a tag on the back. You need to total this wattage and convert it to amps to make sure you don’t overload the circuit. Here’s a link to how to do the math.

Got a use for Electratrac Cables that might be of interest to our readers. Share it with us!

Let’s see if we can get back to the problem I was discussing in my Aug. 3 postings.I was lamenting not being able to meet a customers need for a better multioutlet cable because of the need to order in huge lots and to wait months for design and manufacturing processes to play out.

The customer had a real need and the solution to his problem would have given the world a better mouse trap, but, because the product, Electratrac multioutlet cables, was sourced in China, there was no practical way to get him what he needed.

Why not just build the product on a custom basis, using off-the-shelf parts? The unit cost, when factoring much more expensive US based labor, would be higher, but there would not be a large minimum order, there would be no complicated design and tooling costs, and the time line for getting the product into the users hands would be cut by months.

Here is my idea on making that better moustrap.

Neutrik now makes a line and panel mount connector, similar to their extremely popular Speakon connector system that that is intended for low to moderate amperage AC power distribution. It is called “Powercon” and it is a really well designed connector package.

Powercon is designed so that both the line mount and the panel mount connectors are insulated and shielded in a manner that insures that there are never any exposed electrical connections. It is safe, simple to use, and has a well made twist lock locking mechanism that keeps it secure. It would be great for a multioutlet cable design, based on this diagram.
Using this concept, it would be possible to essentially make up a cable of any number of outlet boxes, spaced at whatever interval you chose. You could have outlet boxes with single, dual or quad outlets and you could have multiple choices of cables to connect the boxes.

There are two problems that could be easily managed by someone with a little electrical savvy, but they could really cause a lot of trouble if used by someone who didn’t understand some basics regarding electrical power distribution.1. Since the voltage delivered by your cable drops over distance, you would need to take care not to extend your cable too far. Larger gauge cable allows more proper current (voltage) to be delivered over greater distances, but the larger the cable gauge the greater the weight-and the cost. As long as you were doing something like tent lighting, a reasonable voltage drop over distance would be acceptable, but if you were using the cable to power multiple electronic devices or computer work stations, voltage drop would really cause a lot of problems.

2. The second, and potentially much more important problem, would be the impact that overloading the cable (too many devices drawing too much current) would cause. It’s not hard to imagine a scenario where a fire danger was created or, in a really extreme case, the jacket of the cable actually melted.

It appears that the item that is missing from my design is some sort of inline circuit breaker that would see the entire load on the cable system, regardless of how many outlet boxes or lengths of intermediate able were used.

This would not solve the problem of voltage drop, but at least the safety issue would be addressed.

There are still a couple of more pretty good sized impediments to getting this better mousetrap to market. I’ll discuss them next time.
That problem is the volatility in copper prices. We received notification that one of our primary extension cord suppliers was raising prices almost 25%. They gave us no warning, so we had no opportunity to stock up at the old price.

GoodBuyGuys.com, as a seller of expendables, is in the marketplace with everybody else when it comes to dealing with the upheaval in commodity prices.

Even though we are a very small business, the makers of our products must compete with some of the largest purchasers in the world when its time to buy raw materials for making the products we sell.

We have seen multiple price increases over the last 18 months on most of our tape products because tape adhesives use products derived from petroleum. One way or the other, $3.00 gasoline is going to be reflected in the price of gaffers tape. Without question, war in the middle east and disruption in the flow of oil from Alaska is going to lead to another round of price increases.

Dealing with the cost of copper is much more difficult to predict. Demand for this metal hit historic highs in November of 2005, primarily based on demand from China. Since our extension cords are made in China, these price increases are what now impact the cables we sell, almost 9 months later. It takes a long time for this price volatility to work its way through the supply chain. We face the double challenge of waiting for the product required to get inventory that is created by shipping from Asia

When a distributor of extension cords in North Carolina has to compete with a country that is building power plants at a dizzying rate, guess who is going to lose?

We are hopeful that copper prices will stabilize, as they are not driven as much by middle east instability and short term interruptions in the delivery system.

If prices decrease in the future, you can be sure that pricing on our extension cords will follow.

I got an interesting call today from a new customer and it started me on problem solving quest that I can’t finish. Maybe someone who drops by here can help.
This customer had ordered some of our Electratrac multi-outlet extension cords and was interested in getting some more. The problem came from the fact that the outlet spacing that his project required was different than those on the standard Electratrac 50 foot 12 gauge cable. He was a display designer for a museum and found the Electratrac product to be useful for putting together temporary displays.
This guy was familiar with the original design process and patenting of the first Electratrac product so we had a lengthy discussion about how hard it was to get good design to market.

The problem was this:
The manufacturer was happy to consider a custom size and custom outlet spacing, but their first question to me, the distributor, was “how many containers do you want?”. This great product, conceived by an American farmer and distributed from a warehouse in Chicago, is made in China. This meant that not only would there be several months of lag time while submitting new (even simple) design information, making new tooling (necessary since the Electratrac outlets and ends are molded on) and the actually manufacturing and ocean shipping of the product. This meant that the American distributor couldn’t even consider taking on my customers problem unless they had a purchase commitment for thousands of cables. Our customer needed six.

So where am I going with this? The real dilemma that I faced was how to combine a real customer’s need with an opportunity to innovate. Certainly, creating a multi-outlet extension cord with a different length and outlet spacing barely qualifies as innovation. Its more like some form of re-inventing the wheel. The work of conceiving and designing the product has been done. How can we simply adapt it to make it useful for more applications without having to go through the incredibly complicated, expensive and time consuming process that would be required to make exactly what our customer needs-to say nothing about what to do with the other 2494 cables that Electratrac would have to import and we would have to commit to buy-remember the “how many container lots do you need” that started this discussion?

Maybe the continuation of offshoring the manufacturing of goods will actually lead to a new renaissance of Ameican innovation. The need for quick turnaround of new products in small quantities could well take advantage of the kind of manufacturing prowess that the US developed after World War II.

Small machine shops, foundries and factories and were quick to the market with new ideas-the work being done by young people, men and women, who used their opportunities in the military to learn new skills that could be applied to civilian applications.

We’ve got an idea for a new product in development that might solve our customers multioutlet cable need.

Check back at this space soon and I will tell you more.
