Their most recent adventure is building a duct tape bridge, a potentially death defying project. The episode aired May 12 and you can watch it online.

While it’s unlikely that any viewer would actually build a duct tape bridge fifty feet up in the air (it took over 200 rolls of tape), this high profile promotion of the strength of duct tape might lead someone to take on a less challenging but possibly just as dangerous project.

One of the many things that the show fails to point out is that there are many different strengths of duct tape and some of the tapes most easily obtained are the ones with the least strength (and the lowest cost). Failure to understand what these specifications related to strength mean could make a project like one you see on television turn out with very different results if you do it yourself with the wrong tape.

As long time sellers of duct tape (25 years and counting), we are always happy to see this lowly product get good publicity. We don’t, however, believe that all publicity is good publicity. It’s one thing to make a prom dress from duct tape and quote another to trust your safety to a product you know only generically as “duct tape”.

This Mythbusters episode has generated some interesting discussion in the physics community (real science!) about duct tape. If you’re interested in following up, click here.

If you’re interested in the different specifications that are used to measure and compare duct tapes, take a look at this.

This article speculated that a lot of the Chinese buying was a stockpiling of material for which China’s manufacturers had no real demand. If that’s true, then the Chinese buying binge may be over.

This may well explain the recent downturn in copper prices after a steady rise over the last six months. This rise made little sense in light of the overall worldwide decline in manufacturing. If this downturn is real, it could be a harbinger for lots of commodity price reductions.

Why do we care? The cost of extension cords (copper and rubber), mic stands (steel and aluminum), tape (cotton, oil and chemicals) and batteries (tin plate and many minerals) are all tied to world commodity prices.

Lets hope that if this recent reversal in commodity prices is real, that we will see it passed through to the products we sell.

It’s outdoor show season, and that means that drought stricken areas all over the country are planning elaborate and expensive outdoor events so they can make it rain.

It’s all but guaranteed that 30 minutes before the event is over, but well after dark, the bottom will drop out of the sky, promising a load out in the rain and a truck full of wet gear.

While the standard hardware store blue tarp is the industry standard for quick cover ups in the rain, they can really cause you some problems when the rain is accompanied by a stiff breeze.

A simple modification in a cheap tarp can make it many times more useful when the raindrops start falling.

Turn the tarp into a plastic bag.

Just take your tarps, fold them in half, and stitch up the edges. If you’re not handy with a sewing machine, gaffers tape or even a stapler will work almost as well.

Larger tarps can be turned into bags that will cover up your entire PA stacks, and you can make smaller bags for covering up things like monitors.

Since the tarps can be easily cut and normally do not unravel, you can take one large tarp and turn it into a lot of custom covers for things like your consoles and amp racks. No hemming necessary.

Since the tarps have grommets, you will have some tie down points, but you probably won’t even need them. Since wind can’t get inside the bag, the harder the wind blows, the firmer the bag stays in place.

Make sure you label each bag with a large label (try using a Sharpie marker directly on the bag) in letters large enough to be seen in the dark.

At the first mention of rough weather, place each bag close to the location where it will be needed and instruct stagehands or volunteers how they are used.

This might well be the best piece of sound equipment you ever buy.

Scientists at UCLA were able to build a simple tape unrolling machine that generated enough X-ray bursts to actually image one of the technicians’ finger bones on an dental photographic plate.

This phenomenon is not completely understood nor is apparent that there is any commercial application for such technology. A charge is generated when the tape is peeled off the roll. Sudden jerking of the tape seems to cause electrons in the tape to give off energy in the form of protons. A slight glow is even generated.

Next time your flashlight batteries go dead, maybe you just need to unwind (really quickly) a roll of duct tape.

It is something of a stretch for me to go from selling audio visual supplies to watching the commodity markets. Unfortunately, volatility in the base components of everything we sell means that this vital information just can’t be ignored.

Between the price of the petroleum derivatives in tape adhesives and the cost of trucking these very heavy products, the cost of oil impacts the cost of every kind of tape we sell. There has been some short term moderation in the price of a barrel of oil, so we are hoping that our suppliers can hold the line a little longer. It is hard to connect the price of filling up your car with what you pay for a roll of gaffers tape, but the connection is real.

After peaking at $4.00 a pound in April, the price of copper is down about 10%, closing at just over $3.60 earlier in the week. As our cable business expands, the cost of the most important, and heaviest component, in an extension cord or speaker cable has forced suppliers to raise prices several times this year. Maybe those increases are over for a little while. Hopefully, this decrease in will help battery makers hold the line as well

Unfortunately, it seems like what one market gives back, another takes away. Dow Chemical’s announcement that it will raise chemical prices by up to 20%, effective this month, is going to impact much of we sell. Tape adhesive resins, battery components and cable jackets all have chemical components, and even if Dow isn’t the supplier, most other major suppliers are sure to follow.

We are grateful to our loyal customers and will do all we can to work with major suppliers to address pricing pressure.

I really did mean “mil“.

I recently came across an online ad for duct tape that listed this information under “roll length”.

60 Yds.-180 Ft.-55 Meters

Yes, a standard roll of duct tape or gaffers tape is 60 yards, or 180 feet, but that is not the same as 55 meters. 55 meters is longer than 60yds. Just a little longer, but nonetheless, it helps me make a point.

Tape manufacturers seem to constantly mix standard and metric measurements at will, usually to serve their own purposes.

The width of a roll of gaffers tape was two inches for decades. Simple, easy to remember, and true. About ten years ago, all the major manufacturers of this and other cloth tapes changed to a metric standard for width, and reduced the width of a roll of tape to 48 millimeters. The change was hardly noticable on a single roll of tape but when you spread that size reduction over literally millions of rolls made by a major manufacturer in a single year, the difference was huge. It adds up to almost a full roll of actual tape in a case of 24 rolls.

By using the metric standard for width they reduced the roll size by 4%, but by not adopting the metric measure of 55 meters for length, they didn’t have to increase the roll length.

To confuse things further, the thickness of tape is measured in “mils” with “mil” meaning a thousandth of an inch. Here the mix standard (inches) and metric (thousandths).

If you’ve got any good ideas on how to standardize this system, let me know.

I don’t watch much television, and if I do, its usually “late night”. I’m always surprised to see how prominently musical equipment manufacturers logos are displayed when you see bands on programs like Late Night With David Letterman or The Tonight Show. While its true that some of these players have endorsement deals with the equipment makers, others don’t. More importantly, in most cases companies like Yamaha and Tama aren’t paying the networks directly for this tremendous exposure. Meanwhile companies like Ford and GM are paying millions for advertising on the same shows that might be nearly as effective.

Its a lot easier to get video exposure for your band than it was a few years ago. You Tube, cable and satellite TV, and other online channels mean that performers using musical equipment have tons of opportunities to be seen. If you are interested in the possibility of getting some sort of endorsement deal, try using a little well placed gaffers tape to cover up the logos of any equipment that might appear in your video.

You can be sure that if someone from Marshall or Fender sees you using their equipment with the logo obscured they will realize that they are missing an opportunity to put their name in front of lots of eyeballs. With a popular YouTube video getting millions of views, this type of exposure can rival that of a 3 minute performance by a popular artist on a network program.

Equipment manufacturers pay lots of money to popular performers to use and be seen with their gear. There’s no reason that you should miss out.

GoodBuyGuys.com is your online source for Shurtape gaffers tape, Duracell Procell batteries, MagLite flashlights, Nashua duct tape, Bay State wire ties, Electratrac and Coast Wire extension cords and OnStage Stand mic stands. We’ve got gaffers tape in 13 colors!

I try spend part of every day visiting forums where there are discussions among hands-on users of the products we sell. You can get a lot of good information about how people use what we sell to solve problems and its possible to develop good theories about how trends will develop over the coming months and years.

Unfortunately, those who moderate these forums (a thankless task, I know) have become so concerned about members using their forums to sell products that they are denying their membership the chance to take advantage of some of the most expert opinions available in the marketplace.

We have a very large product user base of stagehands and theatre techs, and almost every problem they face is going to cost them something to solve. Why deny these hard working technicians access to information from those who know these problem solving products the best.

I tried for a while to post solutions and start legitimate discussion on some of these forums, but I was constantly being threatened with banishment because the moderators did not want any links in their forums to any commercial sites.

Here’s a couple of quick examples.:

A number of theatre techs were discussing how to best remove adhesive residue from cables. I’ve done a lot of this and we sell a product that does the job really well. A link to this product on one of our web sites might have saved somebody a lot of time. Not Allowed!

I came across a post from a church sound technician who was concerned about poor battery life in her wireless microphones. It turns out that the church was using old-style carbon batteries in an attempt to save money. A simple link to buybattery.com where we sell the most highly regarded wireless mic battery around at very competitive prices might have been of real use to this person. Not allowed!

I understand the need to control spam and prevent postings from people who are selling something completely irrelevant to the discussion, but as long as these forum moderators attempt to block information from those who have the most to offer, they are not serving their members the best they could.

I probably use it everyday and you might find a dozen or more cans around my house and shop at any given time. There’s not much it won’t do. It’s sort of like duct tape, just in a spray version.

I bought a new can yesterday and was amazed to see that they still attach the nozzle to the side of the can with a piece of cellophane tape. The same as they have done for 40 or more years. Its not a good solution.

Believe me, I’m all for anything that uses tape, and the makers of WD-40 must use miles of the stuff, one inch at a time, to attach these removable nozzles. The nozzle (just a plastic straw, really) is necessary to get the lubricant/solvent/penetrant into hard-to-reach places but there’s no place to put it when you want to put the cap back on the can. So, you lose the nozzle long before you use up what is in the can.

Rumor has it that the WD-40 company is preparing to release a new type of can with a feature called “Smart Straw“. I hope it works as well as WD-40 does.

The floor at Carmichael is an historic one. This is where Michael Jordan led a UNC team in their home games as they marched toward the 1982 NCAA mens basketball championship. Floor damage would be out of the question.

I watched several matches on Friday and the Permacel 724 seemed to hold up very well. The temporary lines were amazingly straight and the end lines (the ones that really take a beating) held up to heavy foot traffic. This gym floor also serves as the home for UNC’s womens basketball team, so it sees a lot of temporary floor markings.

Thanks in part to the thorough testing at UNC, we have tentatively arranged for the US Volleyball Assoc. to endorse this product and we have seen sales to lots of other NCAA volleyball programs.

It was frustrating for us when the makers of SafeOff were unwilling to stand behind their product, but we did not hesitate to drop them.

We are grateful to Shurtape, the makers of 724, for stepping up to the line.

Occasionally, I get a call (a complaint, really) from a customer who is unhappy because a tape product they ordered was described as being two inches wide, but turned out to really be only about 1 7/8″ in width. They’re not happy, and I don’t blame them. This is usually someone who wants to use tape as a trim or binding product rather than for securing cables, and they discover that they did not get what they expected. All we can do is apologize, refund their money and honor our guarantee.

We’ve been selling tape for a long time and the change in width came about 5 or 6 years ago. Rather than raise prices, all the major US domestic tape manufacturers changed their standard from being two inches wide to 48 mm wide. For most users, this did not really impact their ability to use the tape and they never noticed the change.

Unfortunately, the tape makers changed the width but did not change the description. The metric equivilent is usually marked in parentheses on the box (each 1 inch in width is actully 24 mm) but this info rarely appears in the tape description and some manufacturers fail to acknowledge the disrepancy at all.

Odder still, while tape makers converted to metric equivilents for tape widths, they continued to use the imperial measuring standard for lengths. Most tape continues to be offered in the industry standard of 60 yds. Nobody really has an explanation for mixing the two standards. It really servers the manufacturer and no one else.

We have include info on this width standard in our website, but as long as the major manufacturers continue to label standard gaffers tape and duct tape as being two inches in width, we’ll have to stick with their standard.

It has caused a minor upheaval in our marketing and shipping departments, but most customers seem willing to accept the change. It’s true that Shurtape had been making these products under a license from Permacel for the last couple of years, so the only real change has been in the name.

Now a new question has arisen. Who, among the major tape converters and distributors, is going to be the first to totally abandon the name Permacel and go with the designation Shurtape 665. We have played with different labeling designations includeing Permcel/Shurtape 665, Shurtape-Permacel 665, and just “665 Gaffers Tape” but nothing has taken hold. Most of the resellers of this product continue to call it Permacel 665 and the primary converter continues to call it Permacel 665 on their own web site.

Furthermore, Shurtape has been slow in updating their own web sites to show the correct specifications and colors for the products that have been rebranded Shurtape.

We work with many high volume customers who base their purchasing decison on maufacturers specifications and it has been difficult to convince them that the products are unchanged. When we tell them the product are the same, yet the Permacel and Shurtape web sites disagree on the specs of the tape, it is difficult to support our position.

It will be interesting to see if individual resellers are allowed to make the name change at their own pace or if the manufacturer (or Permacel) will force an accelerated adoption of the new name. More later!

One of my primary interests is in the analysis of search terms, as this is a good indicator of how potential customers are seeking us out.

Recently the logs indicated that someone had found one of our sites using Google, with the search phrase “tape“. We’ve been selling tape for a long time and score really well with search phrases like “gaffers tape” and “Permacel 665” but I never even considered that we could be found through a search term as broad as “tape”. After all, when you search for “tape” in Google you get over 147,000,000 returns.

Imagine my surprise when I searched for “tape” and buytape.com came up as no. 5 on the first page. That’s truly amazing, especially when you consider how many kinds of tape there are and how many different companies sell some kind of tape.

I never cease to be amazed at how diligent, if somewhat boring, search engine optimazation will return truly amazing results. There is really no substitute for attending to the details of what Google and other search engines look for in a well-optimized page. A company of our size and with the resources we have at our disposal should not be able to go head-to-head with companies like 3M and Polyken and come out on top in web search. This can’t even really be called “leveling the playing field”.

Still, we are pleased to get this sort of recognition and hope that we can hold onto our ranking for a long, long time.

GoodBuyGuys.com is your online source for Shurtape gaffers tape, Duracell Procell batteries, MagLite flashlights, Nashua duct tape, Bay State wire ties, Electratrac and Coast Wire extension cords, OnStage Stand mic stands, and tape.

It is work that I enjoy, but it can be complicated. The learning curve is steep.

One of the new tasks that has landed on my desk is managing our Google Adwords account. Most of our search engine traffic comes from non-paid search since our web sites score well for lots of keywords, but we still feel that Adwords is worth the trouble.

New, at least to me, is that Adwords gives some additonal value to your site if the landing page (the page that the link in your Adword actually takes the user to) is relevant to the text in the ad. Its hard to believe that this isn’t obvious to anyone who is spending money on Adwords or any keyword driven online advertising.

Why would anyone pay good money for an ad for the keyword “gaffers tape” and then take you to a web page selling paint when you click on their ad. Their site may offer tape somewhere in its pages, but someone doing an online search is not likely to drill down in the site far enough to find it. They will simply click on a competitor’s site.

The amount of time needed to create a custom landing page that has useful references to the actual keyword used in the search is small when compared to the wasted money spent when a keyword-driven search does not provide the information that the user hoped to find.

Google has made tons of money on Adwords and they are to be applauded for being willing to forego some revenue in order to improve the customer experience. Giving less value to a landing page that is not relevant to the search terms is another reason why Google will probably continue to rule in online search.

GoodBuyGuys.com is your online source for Shurtape gaffers tape, Duracell Procell batteries, MagLite flashlights, Nashua duct tape, Bay State wire ties, Electratrac and Coast Wire extension cords, OnStage Stand mic stands, and other useful products.

It didn’t have to be this way.

Lots of our large volume purchasers of gaffers tape place their orders on a quarterly or semiannual basis. The ordering is done by a large (and often offsite) purchasing office and their purchasing decision quite often has little to do with the actual needs of the “hands on” users of the product. These folks in purchasing write specifications for a product and once they have approved a specific product and its specs, then this information is embedded in lots of documents and procedures that control what can actually be bought.

Even though we have assured these customers that the products are identical, their procedures and purchasing manuals don’t allow for a quick and simple change from one manufacturer to another. The process of approving a new product may require writing new specs, submitting their purchasing needs out for new bids and getting approval from folks far removed from those who use the tape. This decision making can take a long time and sometimes the results are not what anybody really hoped for.

Because the brand name “Permacel” was so deeply entrenched in the purchasing process of large institutions it can’t simply be replaced with “Shurtape“. Permacel was the dominant brand for gaffers tape for so long that their name had become synonymous with the term “gaffers tape“. Since distributors were given no warning that this change was coming, we did not have a chance to get samples into these buyers hands in time to aid in a smooth transition.

We are hopeful that, over time, these loyal customer can accomodate this change and we can pick up these relationships again. These were good customers and we miss them.

For years local tradition has allowed parade attendees to mark out and reserve prime parade viewing locations with duct tape so that they don’t have to wait hours on the curb to see the parade. The town is up in arms over attempts to end this tradition and it has escalated to the point that its is being viewed as a dispute over private ownership of public property.

Portland Commissioner Randy Leonard reports that what he calls the “duct tape affair” has generated more public comment than discussions about the Iraq War and the FBI’s anti-terrorism force combined. This has become such a big deal with Portland locals that the town council is actually going to have to pass a resolution for or against this practice.

While we are all for the use of as much duct tape as possible, this is one issue where the solution seems so self-evident that it wouldn’t call for wasting the time of a legislative body. If someone is willing to wait by the side of the road for a parade, it certainly isn’t fair for a last minute arrivee to push them out of their place.

Duct tape can do a lot of things for you, but standing in line is not one of them.

Miles Davis, the famous jazz trumpeter, once said “don’t play what’s there, play what’s not there”.
When I write an article or blog post about gaffers tape or microphone cables I certainly hope that my writing is something that someone would actually like to read. Regardless, my true intended audience is something known as a robot or a spider. Internet search engines constantly send around these spiders to sample internet content and make notes of what links to what. This is the major source for data to determine what information you are offered when you enter a word or term in a search engine.

Since Miles was famous for playing a piece by completely ignoring what the composer had actually written, what he played would be completely invisible to an internet robot. At this point, robots are indexing text, not sounds, but you can be sure that someone, somewhere is working on a version of spider that can read music and index it for search engines. Its going to be an even tougher challenge to index Miles.

Most of our gaffers tape customers use gaffers tape for securing cables to the floor. The keep people from tripping over wires when its necessary to run cables across a stage or in an area where there is lots of foot traffic. It works great for this purpose but can get a little pricey if you have lots of cables to install.

We got an order recently from a customer who uses this tough, durable cotton cloth tape for a much more permanent purpose. They use gaffers tape for making wallets. These aren’t the duct tape wallets kids make in summer camp. They are really beautiful accessories that are designed for many years of use. They have even developed some sort of photographic process that lets them print images directly on the tape.

A roll of 4 in . x 60 yd. gaffers tape costs $24.99, and I am guessing that it takes no more than a yard of tape to make one of these wallets. That means that at prices of $40.00 or more for one of these billfolds, the wallet makers can generate a gross profit of $2400.00 for their $24.99 investment in raw material.

Now I know that there are some other materials involved, as well as a lot of labor. Still, it looks like these guys might end up with a lot of $$$ in their own wallets.

North Carolina is a healthy business environment and I have been at this long enough to have survived a number of economic cycles. Sunrise, sunset!

One of the most interesting rise and fall stories of our state’s economy has been the film industry. The area around Wilmington has been the host to the film and television production industry for over 20 years and there have been a number of boom and bust cycles. Major motion pictures like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and television series like Matlock and Dawson’s Creek have called Wilmington home.

I get an online news letter from the NC Film Office and if their newsletter is a true indication of what is going on in our state, then this industry is pretty healthy.

Unfortunately, one reason for the increase in in-state productions is the continued efforts by our state government to favor certain industries with tax breaks. It seems that a production company can accumulate as much as $7.5 million in tax breaks on sales tax, payroll taxes and services taxes. All because they are willing to set up business in NC long enough to make a movie.

I’ve written about similar tax advantages provided when Google decided to locate a server farm in western North Carolina earlier this year. While I understand the importance of bringing jobs to the state (even temporary ones) it is difficult to see how this is so much more important than giving tax breaks to the businesses that have been providing jobs for North Carolinians for years. These are businesses that don’t immediately pick up and move on when some other state (or country) lures them with a better tax incentive. NC has seen major film and television productions move to other states or abroad based solely on who would give the producer the most tax advantages.

Maybe its time to add long term loyalty to the requirements for getting a tax break.

Yesterday was a beautiful early spring day and the extra hour was put to good use getting things ready for early spring planting.

I regulary haul home various samples of products we sell or consider offering to customers, as lots of them have applications in non-production uses. If you’re an avid gardener, you might find these are useful things to have on your garden workbench.

Cotton tie line is the best thing I have ever found for tying plants to stakes. It’s soft so it doesn’t damage the plant and it is easy to tie and untie over and over.

I keep a roll of paper label tape and a Sharpie Marker handy for quick labels. The Sharpie is waterproof and the adhesive on Permacel 724 label tape allows it to be removed and replaced.

Tool hands can be repaired or padded with a quick turn of gaffers tape.

Need to do some color coding? Electrical tape comes in lots of colors and it is waterproof.

My fences are getting pretty old since I have been gardening the same space for a long time. A quick and strong fence repair is easy with a nylon wire tie. Black ties with UV protection will hold up outdoors for years.

A quick waterproof repair to a boot or a glove can be made with a strip of duct tape.

Happy gardening!

Goodbuyguys.com is a collection of web sites (including buytape.com, buybattery.com, buyextensioncord.com, buyaflashlight.com and buywireties.com) designed to deliver a great selection of hard to find products for use around the home.

Its unusual for someone to have a problem, but we are always happy to stand behind the guarantee, no matter why the customer is unsatisfied.

Still, it was tough to give this customer their money back. The customer was an avant garde dance company doing a performance on a vinyl dance floor that they had soaked with water (think slip & slide)

The customer was unhappy because the vinyl dance floor tape they had purchased wouldn’t stick properly. “But your website said it was waterproof“, she kep saying over and over.

After a little more discussion, I realized that she was unhappy because the tape wouldn’t stick properly AFTER they had soaked the floor. Maybe there is a tape that will stick to water, but we haven’t found it yet.

We’ll keep working on it, but name Liquid Tape is already spoken for.

Goodbuyguys.com is a collection of web sites (including buytape.com, buybattery.com, buymicstand.com, buyextensioncord.com, buyaflashlight.com and buywireties.com) designed to deliver a great selection of theatrical supplies.

I wrote a while back on the subject of how people who produce video in front of live audiences are blind to anything that the camera does not see, regardless of what the audience in the hall might be viewing. Well, it certainly seems like they are ahead of folks who do radio shows in front of live audiences. It appears that they see nothing at all!

I have been watching a lot of digital tv and I stumbled upon a telecast of a live radio show produced weekly by the company that broadcasts basketball games at the University of North Carolina, my alma mater. Apparently I was the only person who realized that people might be watching as well as listening.

This show is broadcast from a local restaurant and is done for a live and broadcast audience. The set consisted of the coach and the host sitting at a table with a banner slapped on it with duct tape ( wrinkles and all) and it looked like it had been lit with a couple of maglites. About half the time the single static camera shot was blocked by people walking back and forth in front of the camera, probably on their way to the bar.

Its difficult to understand how an organization that should be as media savy as an NCAA Division 1 athletic department could allow a presentation like this to be seen by anyone. It wasn’t good enough for YouTube!

The proliferation of digital television channels is going to mean that more and more program material that was intended to be heard but not seen is going to be broadcast. I’m not advocating that the bar for production values be set very high, but it’s got to be set higher than this.

The number four choice was DUCT TAPE. That’s right, the duct tape wallet craze has moved on to iPods.

Somebody has actually started a business making iPod cases out of duct tape. These cases are colorful and durable and certainly make a fashion statement. At $16.00 each, this may be the most income ever derived from a single roll of duct tape.

Here’s how the Digital Music Weblog described these fashion accessories:

“The cases themselves are everything you’d expect from such a fun-loving company: bright colors, eye-catching, target-like designs, clear plastic windows to protect screens, the right holes for cords, and a touch wheel that works even through the case.”

They must have made a lot of these cases, because they had enough tape scraps to decorate a car:

As for that Yahoo survey, like I said, it wasn’t exactly scientific. They had a total of nine responses.
