I recently went on a “round up” and moved all the domain registrations to a single registrar because it was becoming increasingly difficult to keep up with renewals.

I chose to use Godaddy.com because their pricing seemed a little lower and they offer hosting services as well.

Now I am reconsidering that decision.

Godaddy.com is the “hands down winner” of the contest for the “most characters per page contest” and they lead the competition by miles in the “most in-your-face upselling contest” as well.  It is impossible to complete any sort of transaction at their site without their making dozens of attempts to sell you more products and services, and completing any sort of complicated administrative tasks almost always requires a phone call.

There ought to be some way to turn off all the special offers, deals and contests and choose a simple menu option for the task you came there to get done.

It is past time for Godaddy.com to provide a simple-to-navigate option for customers who know why they came to the site.  We can save looking at the Danica Patrick pictures till later.

The most recent (and our favorite) way to solve the issue involves something dear to my heart-gaffers tape.  It seems that much of the problem caused by how you hold the new iPhone can be solved by putting a small piece of  gaffers tape over the part of the external antenna where you might normally touch the phone.  This keeps your hand from interfering with the antenna transmission.  (CBS News video of this solution)

Net neutrality is the concept that says all traffic should move across the internet at the same speed and that those who actually own the networks (the large telcom companies in most cases)  should not be able to favor one sort of traffic over another .  The internet service providers in this case (AT&T and Comcast) argued that they should be able to slow down the movement of large files when network speed was impeded.  The court agreed with them, essentially telling the FCC that it had no power to regulate the internet.

Now,  I’m no fan of large telecom companies (particularly AT&T) but I have to admit that their argument resonates with me.  Those who argued (unsuccessfully) that the federal government should exercise control over data movement are ignoring a long standing precedent related to one of the most highly regulated infrastructures in the country.

I’m talking about highways.

I used to own a fleet of trucks and once a year I dutifully wrote a really big check to register my vehicles with the state dept. of transportation.  The cost of registering each vehicle was based on its weight, the theory being “the bigger the truck the more wear and tear there is to highways and bridges”.  I paid another tax every time I bought fuel-larger trucks burned more diesel fuel and thus paid more of a tax called “highway use”.

The FCC’s argument seemed to say that the telecoms should not be able to do something that federal and state government had been doing for decades.

It would seem that this argument deserves consideration in the net neutrality discussion.  The government does not actually own the internet infrastructure, but the argument still is relevant.  Those who make the most of the internet-transferring the largest files and the most data-would be charged the most.

The owners of the internet infrastructure don’t want to regulate what is actually being transmitted.  What they really want to be able to do is charge more to those who use their infrastructure the most.

It’s an argument worth considering.

I reference this story as an introduction to one of the most vexing, but easily solvable problems I face every day.  We make an effort to make sure customers and reach us on the phone, even though we are a web based business, and we usually prefer to conduct transactions online.  Still, we’ve had the same toll free phone number for 25 years and try to insure that it is answered by the third ring.

More and more, the caller on the other end of the line is a non-native English speaker and this usually means trouble.  We deal in some fairly technical issues (product specs, tracking info, etc.) and language barriers can be a real problem.  We’re a small business and, do date, no one in our shop is fluent in any other languages.  Sometimes the confusion is humorous, but usually it is just frustrating-on both ends of the line.

In just about every case the problem, or inquiry, could be much more easily resolved if the customer would go to the web rather than the phone.  In most cases, the answer to their question is readily available on one of our thousands of web pages.  If not, our email address and contact form are easy to find.

Best of all, new translation software from Google means that the inquiry doesn’t even need to be posted in English. An inquiry in Spanish about a “micrófono se encuentra” can quickly be translated to “microphone stand” and a term like UPS tracking number becomes “Número de rastreo de UPS” with a couple of key strokes.  It’s almost like having an international customer service department.

We’ll continue to prominently publish our toll free phone numbers and cheerfully answer the phone, but if you want the best customer service we can offer, then you’ll be happiest by sticking to the web.

Today  Seth’s posting deals with how a business can keep prices down by having a customer do some of the work.  This is what internet pricing is all about.  When we are able to get you to do most of the time consuming work in setting up an account (read-data entry) and processing payments (read-credit card authorization), then there are savings that can be applied to our pricing.  A more direct  route between us and our customers means a more efficient operation. Thus, a narrower profit margin is acceptable.  No need for a middle man to do any hand holding on either side of the transaction.

We get the same phone call almost every day (different caller-same script).  It always starts out “ I found you on the internet.”  “We are a reseller and I was wondering if you have reseller pricing?“  I patiently try to explain that we do have scaled pricing, but it is based on how much you buy, not who you are.  It’s not like you found us on some sort of “secret” internet.  If you found us online, then so can your customer.

By asking for “reseller pricing” you are asking me to pay you to do work that I have already done-making our company easy to find by anyone who might need our products.

Unless you can convince me that by selling through you that some sort of value is added for the end user, then we will continue to do all we can to avoid the middle man.

I’ve been working on this idea for a while, but I need a little help.  It makes sense to me, but I can’t quite do the math.

There’s lots of talk these days about getting rid of the penny.  The government says that the cost of producing the one cent piece is more than the value of the coin and that the great majority pennies are in jars on dressers or in the sofa cushions.  Still, pennies continue to be produced by the millions.

One reason is pricing.  I have long believed in the power of a nine (e.g. $.99) in the pricing of items, making a customer subliminally believe that they are getting a bargain.  Its deeply ingrained in retail thinking and we use it ourselves on almost every product we sell.

Getting rid of the penny would mean a revolutionary new way of thinking about price.

How about this instead.

Get rid of the penny, but leave the nines (or whatever the number) in the price.  Every transaction would be rounded up or down to the nearest nickel.  A $.99 item would round up to a dollar when the transaction was completed, a $.91 or $.92 item would round down to $.90.  If the price was $.93 or $.96, you would pay $.95.

At the end of the day (or week, or month) I’m guessing that the total amount charged by a merchant, between rounding up and rounding down, would be almost, if not exactly, what would have been charged if the actual price was used, even after adding sales tax.

If this worked, current pricing psychology and pricing schema could remain in place, the books would balance, and that pesky penny would be a thing of the past.

Yes, I really thought of this myself.

Pressure from manufacturers to control the price that online merchants charge for certain items mean that more and more web sites are no longer posting pricing with their items.

What may first look like an unwillingness of the seller to show you the price may actually be an effort on their part to keep the manufacturer from forcing them to charge a price dictated to them.

When you look at an item on a web site but can’t see the price until you “put it in your shopping cart“, it may be an effort on the merchant’s part to keep the manufacturer from easily seeing what price is being charged.  Because the price doesn’t appear with the item,  it won’t be indexed at popular shopping “bots” like Shopzilla and Pricegrabber, making it a lot harder for the manufacturer to control.

New interpretations of anti-trust law have given the manufacturers a lot more power in dictating prices to sellers.  Posting “lower than approved” pricing at a web site may violate advertising agreements.  This is likely why you can’t see the price until you add the item to a shopping cart.

This makes comparison shopping a whole lot tougher.

Periodically we are approached by manufacturers who would like us to sell their products, but negotiations always quickly end if they attempt to dictate the price we will charge our customers.  So called “MAP” pricing (minimum advertised pricing)does not come into play when we determine how to price what we sell to you.

We will always strive to give you the best price without regard to what the manufacturer thinks we should charge.  If we can take advantage of lower overhead and other efficiencies to offer you a better price than the competition, we are happy to share the savings.

If you’ve attended a major concert or other arena event recently, you realize that you can’t turn around without someone sticking their hand in  your pocket, even though you’ve already bought a ticket for the event.

Start with the ticket service fee.  You can’t buy a ticket without paying that, even if you purchase at the box office.

Next comes parking.  $7.00 is the going rate around here, and some tickets automatically add a parking surcharge to every ticket, regardless of how many patrons might share a ride.

Next comes concessions.  Mandatory purse and backpack checks assure that you won’t bring in so much as a bottle of water.  Once you’re inside, prices range from $4.00 up for a simple snack to as much as $11.00 for a beer.  If you’re covering the cost for a family of four, your out of pocket expenses can easily double the ticket price.

Ticketmaster and Live Nation share the credit for devising this system, and the Justice Department decisions means that it is now open season on event patrons.

By allowing these two companies to combine forces there is no longer any reason for one to try to gain a competitive advantage over the other by pricing tickets or add ons more competitively.

The new Nexus One cell phone was released earlier this month, but buyers, some whom have paid over $500.00 for the smartphones, find they are on their own if they have problems.

Not only does Google not provide a customer service phone number, they have announced that buyers should not expect to have emails answered for at least 48 hours.

This has the potential to give Google a real black eye before they even get started with their new hardware sales initiative.  A company with the profits and excess cash flow of Google would have had no problem in financing and developing a customer service operation to support the launch of the Nexus.

It’s hard to know if they were being arrogant, or just naive, but they would have had no difficulty in understanding what sort of customer support would be required to support a new cell phone.  Just visit a Verizon store.

I grabbed a couple of items and jumped in the express line.  To my right, each of the next three lanes had at least two young mothers with one or more children in tow.  My items cost less than six dollars, but their overflowing carts suggested that they would spend a hundred dollars or more by the time they left the store.

What sort of thinking would lead the store management to allow me to jump in a quick serve line, but force these loyal high dollar customers to line up one behind the other and wait to be served while they attempted to keep their kids entertained?

Seems backwards to me.

Why not have a “moms only” line, one where the store would provide a little extra service while assuring that these valued customers were able to get in and out with as little complication as possible?

Parents purchasing for the family will be back to the store over and over again, yet grocery stores continue to serve the lowest dollar customers with the highest level of service while they buy items that they may not purchase again for weeks.

Every desk in our office holds a Dell computer, but recent Twitter posts will certainly make me reconsider their computers the next time we need a new one.

The Times reports that thousands have posted to Twitter about their Dell experience and the conversation has even migrated to Dell’s own blog.  Complaints of delivery times delayed by as much as two months have forced Dell to go on the defensive, but they seem unable to counter the volume of complaints that continue to flow to Twitter.

Fair or not, the ability of a customer to post to Twitter about a consumer experience and immediately join a community of like minded buyers means its a new day for big players like Dell.

Our UPS pickup driver just dropped by to let us know that UPS had decided to make no deliveries on Dec. 31 and that he had been ordered to take the day off.  We have been shipping UPS this fall for the first time in several years, and, all  in all, it has been a good experience.

Discovering that they would not be serving their customers (namely, us) on a day when we will be open and serving our customers (you) really caught us off guard.

It is difficult to see how a company whose third quarter 2009 revenues were down almost $2 billion can really afford to take off a holiday that no one else takes off.  When your average daily package volume, your operating profit and your earnings per share are all down significantly from 2008 levels, the logic of this decision escapes me and will probably escape the logic of the stock market as well.

We spend much of our time making sure that we partner with businesses who have our customers’ best interests in mind.  UPS’s unwillingness to deliver to our customers, many of whom will be involved in producing New Year’s Eve events, on what should be a regular work day makes our job a lot more difficult.

I’m glad we kept our FedEx account open.  We’ll be happy to ship your order for  Dec. 31 delivery even if UPS isn’t.

I’m not sure how they are doing financially, but their bottom line has to be helped by the constant barrage of gaudy (orange!) full page ads that AT&T is running.  Seems like there have two or three in the front section every day since the beginning of the month.

I ignore the ads (not easy to do) but my eyes were drawn to this article in the business section about none other than AT&T.

It seems that they are asking their customers who subscribe to unlimited data plans to limit their bandwidth usage or face the possibility of being forced to a “pay as you use” plan.  Apparently, AT&T is unable to handle the data requirements that are being generated by IPhone users, even though they are the only service provider that works with the Apple smart phone.

Instead of expanding capacity and providing the service that they promised, mighty AT&T intends to “educate” their customers about their data consumption in hopes that they will  “cut back”.

Hey AT&T!  Instead of spending huge sums of money on luring new customers with full page ads, how about building some new towers.

We’re happy to hear from them, of course, but  they never seem to realize that placing an order at a secure web site is much safer than giving your credit card info to a stranger over the phone.

Unfortunately, if you don’t know what to look for, it is difficult to know when you are at a web site where you can make a secure purchase.

When you move from the catalog portion of one of the goodbuyguys web sites to begin an actual checkout, you will see that the “http:” part of the web address at the top of the page, changes to “https:”   That “s” means “secure“.  The “s” is an indicator that the details of your purchase will be encrypted before they are submitted over the web.

You’ll also see a tiny image of a padlock at the end of the address line.  Click on that padlock image if you want to know the details regarding who is certifying that the site is secure.

Here are some more tips to insure the security of your online purchase.

-Never provide your credit number in an email or instant message

No question, the IPhone is easier to use and has an elegant feel in your hand.  When it comes to building user-friendly computer and telcom hardware, Apple has no peer.

I you are willing to take the time to peel back a couple of layers of the onion, you find something quite different.

While the IPhone may offer more apps, the Droid uses an open source operating system that allows a developer to create an application and sell it on their own without Apple’s approval, since the sale doesn’t have to go through an ITunes transaction.  No more censoring gatekeeper that expects to be paid for every app sale!  There are already more than 10,000 apps for the Droid.

The turn-by-turn GPS navigation on the Droid is far superior to IPhone navigation.  Spoken word instructions mean there is no need to look at tiny maps on the screen while driving.  No subscription service required.

Perhaps best of all, the Droid works with the Verizon wireless network.  No more dealing with AT&T No Customer Service Department.

The future-A handheld device as intuitive and elegant as the IPhone, running the next generation of the Google Android operating system and able to access the Verizon network.  Put it on your 2010 Christmas list.

One of my alerts is set to the search phrase “extension cord“.  Unfortunately, all too often this time of year these alerts also include the word “fire“.

Somehow, it seems that Christmas decorating and overloaded extension cords regularly make headline news.  While it’s easy to understand how this can happen, it’s also easy to prevent.

All electrical devices (including lights and powered decorations) are required to be tagged with information relating to how much power they consume.  This information is usually listed along with the term “watts”.  When you plug multiple lights or electrical decorations into an extension cord, it is necessary to add the total number of watts (also known as “current draw”) to determine what size of extension cord is called for.

If this simple arithmetic is a little daunting, there is an easier way to figure out if there is a problem.

Plug everything in, turn all the decorations on, and hold the extension cord in your hand for three or four minutes.  If the cord becomes warm to the touch, then it is overloaded.  Remove one or more of the items plugged into it and try again.

If you can’t reduce the current draw, then you need to increase the size (known as the “gauge” of the cable).  This can be a little confusing, as the smaller the gauge number, the higher the current carrying capacity of the extension cord.  That is, a 14 gauge cord has a lower current carrying capacity than a 12 gauge cord.

Finally, even if you don’t have an overloaded extension cord, running it under a rug or behind a wall can still create a fire hazard if air can’t circulate and remove any heat build up.  It should be left out in the open.

Take a minute to plan before you begin holiday decorating.  I don’t want to be reading about you in Google Alerts.

After 10 minutes on hold, the customer service rep I finally spoke with informed me that my service had been suspended because my payment was past due.  After a quick check with our bookkeeper, I was able to inform her that the payment had been made almost two weeks ago and that it must have been misapplied.

My expectation was that a company that had worked so hard to get me to become a customer would simply allow me to pay online, adjust the misapplied payment and get the phone working again.

Boy, was I wrong!

She proceeded to tell me that she had no record of a payment and that the service would remain suspended until the payment was received.  Moreover, she informed me that  I would be charged a $36.00 reconnect fee and it might take several days to reactivate the phone after payment was received.   Finally, she went out of her way to lecture me on the point that I should make my payment at least 10 days before the due date to give them time to apply it properly.

It was clear that she didn’t believe me when I said I intended to terminate my contract.

It’s now five hours later.  The AT&T contract is terminated.  I have a new account with Verizon (at a considerable savings) and a brand new Google Android phone.  It took Verizon all of 15 minutes to port my number and activate the phone.  (AT&T had taken two days!)

I had gone to the Verizon store just to see what my options might be for new phone service, but was met with such a high level of customer service by a knowledgeable sales person that I left with the new Google smart phone and new phones for everyone else on  my account as well.  It was the first time I had ever left a cell phone store not feeling like I had been beaten with a rock.

Tomorrow I’ll return the AT&T Microcell that I had to buy to get cell coverage at my home, even though the AT&T service maps show that my location should have been covered.

As to the $175.00 AT&T termination fee, I’ll gladly pay it and make a matching charitable contribution as well.

Still, the thousands upon thousands of spam messages I have to wade through (even after applying spam filters) are just one of the costs of doing business.  I know that there are other ways to have people get in touch with you, but I don’t regret having my email address so widely available.  Nothing works as well for one-on-one communication.

The idea that the inconvenience of dealing with spam would force me to give up the most direct way for someone interested in our products to get in touch is just too high a price to pay.  It just doesn’t make sense to create barriers that stand in the way of a real dialogue with anyone who takes time to look at our web offerings.

The times reports that Dennis O’Connell, the props manager at Carnegie Hall, earned $530004.00 in pay and benefits last year.  That’s right.  Over a half million dollars income working as a stagehand.

These figures come from the Carnegie Hall’s 2007-2008 tax return and it shows that  several other stagehands had compensation packages that exceeded $400,000.00.

The times went to some length to point out that stagehand pay many times far exceeded the amount earned by well known performers actually appearing on the stage.

The top executive at Carnegie Hall, Clive Gillinson, actually defended the pay, saying that stagehands “have huge and varied jobs to carry out”.

Now, I’ve been to Carnegie Hall (my wife & son performed with The Duke Chapel Choir there) and I’ve seen these stagehands at work.  Moving risers, setting up the conductors podium and controlling the lighting may require some special abilities, but probably not on par with a skilled surgeon.  I’m not sure that they even require any specific education.

I remember in detail the “huge and varied jobs” I did as a stagehand-everything from unloading a truck to climbing a lighting truss-and how happy I was to earn $15.00 an hour.  I seemed like a fair wage at the time, and some of the work I did was so interesting that I probably would have done it for free.

Sure, there is some wear and tear on the body, but I’m guessing that the earnings of a Carnegie stagehand, including double and triple overtime, compensation for unsed vacation, and various union-mandated payouts, go a long way towards easing the pain.

The next time you pay $100 for a ticket and go to a concert, pay careful attention to the stagehands you see.  They may be the highest paid performers in the building.

Duracell’s “Hours of Power” program will make donations  to fire departments  in New York, Chicago, Knoxville Tenn., Springfield Mo. and Wichita Ks.   These local fire department will then distribute Duracell flashlights and batteries to city residents at no cost.

Best of all, you can participate and help maximize the value of Duracell’s program.  Every time you visit Duracell’s Hours of Power web site and click on the 100 Hours Button Duracell will increase the value of their contribution.  To date, 49,600 “Hours of Power” have been donated.  Their goal is 10 million hours which will convert to lots of flashlights, batteries and chargers donated to first responders and local citizens.

We live in a community that is regularly hard hit by weather-related power problems caused by hurricanes and ice storms.  It would be great if theis program was so successful that Duracell extended it to some cities in North Carolina.

These ever loyal Apple employees are apparently jumping at the chance to make a little more money.

According to The Loop, a tech blog that covers all things Apple, Microsoft is approaching managers of Apple Stores and offering them positions with Microsoft at significantly higher salaries.  Once on board with Microsoft, these managers are then contacting Apple Store employees who are apparently also succumbing to Microsoft’s generous offers. I guess that’s why Apple calls them geniuses!

After 20 plus years of banging my head against the wall over countless Microsoft software problems, I am really looking forward to being able to put a face on Microsoft. Getting a one on one explanation of why a simple OS upgrade takes two days and two dozen system reboots is something on my “must do” list.

Unless they lock the doors to anyone except purchasers of a new Zune, there are going to be so many angry MS customers lined up at the “Guru Bar” (Microsoft’s version of Apple Store’s “Genius Bars”) that people interested in making a purchase won’t even be able to get into the building.

As to those former Apple Store managers, they can go ahead and start thinking about what they’re going to do once  the plug is pulled  on this project.

Microsoft has really raised the bar on billion dollar bad ideas.

While it is fine for casual phone calls, business users who are trying to make an impression or make sure that detailed information is transmitted accurately run into lots of problems.  VOIP calling (voice over internet protocol) is still not ready for these users.

The biggest problem we have encountered is receiving customer calls that we don’t realize are being made on an internet connection.  The call sounds clear but there is a delay between the time the customer speaks and when we hear them. When there is a delay, you tend to talk over each other’s words and both parties to the conversation can appear that they are being rude to the other.  At worst, its embarrassing.  At best, it can still be confusing.Until this technology is perfected, I wish I had a button on my phone that would tell me that the caller was speaking through a computer.  It would make things a lot easier.

The first several times we got online orders from “usfirst“, frankly we thought they were coming from a bank or other financial institution.  I’m glad I took the time to look a little closer.

First sponsors a national program for for middle and high school students who design and build robots  and then compete against other teams.

It turns out that they use gaffers tape to lay out the “arena” where the robots compete.  The lanes and end zones are marked with different colors of cloth tape.

First was founded in 1989 by Dean Kamen, a well known inventor and entrepreneur probably best known for inventing the Segway.

To date, First has awarded almost $10 million in scholarships.  This year they will work with over 196,000 students making up 1680 teams.

This year the national First championship will be at the Georgia dome in Atlanta April 16-18.  I hope they will take us along.

I was intrigued by a story on NPR’s Morning Edition today about an arts group  called  Fractured Atlas.  Fractured Atlas, a non-profit based in New York, provides much-needed support to artists and arts organizations so that they can function as more effective businesses.

We know that many valuable arts groups will not make it through these challenging economic times, and Fractured Atlas is playing a key role in helping those groups most challenged.  They offer a broad range of programs and services, including professional development, access to funding information, insurance and arts advocacy.

Our business has been built on extending credit to arts groups of all sizes, and I have never regretted those decisions.  The financial health of local theatre and dance companies, orchestras and performance venues is critical to our own success. I wrote about Craig Newmark of Craig’s List occupying the position of “customer service rep” even though he owns a company worth many millions of dollars.  I enjoy working in customer service, as well, as it affords me the opportunity to speak directly with customers.  That’s where the ideas for improvements to our existing web pages almost always come from.

A simple question from a customer asking for more (or more specific) information about something they have seen on the web can quickly lead to improvement in a page.  The best part is, quite often we quickly see an increase in sales of the product they asked about after the page update is made.

Having your customers serve in the role of unpaid editors not only adds value to your web sites, but taking the time to find out what additional information the customer needs is always appreciated by the caller.

Don’t forget-the best web page is one that is never finished.

Naturally, I am sorry to see so many newspapers in financial difficulty and regret that some good papers will not survive our current economic troubles.

I can’t argue with the supposition that one of the greatest problems for newspapers is the loss of classified advertising and that the primary source of this lost revenue is Craig’s List.

I use Craig’s List almost every day and there is no better way to track down local resources, whether you are buying, hiring or trying to sell something.

Even though I see Craig’s List as a real problem for the papers I love to read, I still have great admiration for its founder, Craig Newmark.

The owner of this multi-million dollar enterprise (some say multi-billion) uses this job description for himself: Customer service representative and community organizer.

Rather than settling into the corner office and surrounding himself with lots of manager, Newmark stays right in front of his customers.

His simple business philosophy: Treat people like you want to be treated.

It’s easy to see how Craig’s List has stolen the classified ad business from newspapers, but a lot more difficult to see why Mr. Newmark chooses to define his role in the company as one of customer service.

Newmark is quick to admit that others are better suited to manage his company and that he is much more comfortable (and valuable) with serving in a capacity that he understands, enjoys and which defines the core of his company.

Lots of business owners could learn something from Craig Newmark.

As businesses downsize as a way to survive in a very challenging economic environment, lots of “behind the scenes” owner/managers in retail and service businesses are suddenly turning up “behind the counter” instead.  While it is unfortunate that this may mean that someone has lost their job, it holds great promise for an overall improvement in the quality of customer service.

The attention that an owner can give to a customer is seldom matched by most employees and having an owner meeting the public face-to-face can provide a great training opportunity.  “Do as I do” rather than “do as i say”.

While no one feels good about an economy in tumult, if we come out on the other side of the current crisis with a new emphasis on customer service, then there will be some small good that comes from this.

We are proud to tell them “Chapel Hill, NC” which more often than not (especially this time of year) leads to some sort of discussion about college basketball.  It’s great to live in the center of the college basketball universe with UNC and Duke just a stone’s throw away.

Yesterday, NPR’s Morning Edition ran a story on their Marketplace program that put another part of our community on the map.

Before we moved to Chapel Hill, we spent 20 years in the next-door-neighbor town of Carrboro.  It was a great place to work, but we outgrew our space.

Marketplace focused on a very interesting business venture called Carrboro Creative Coworking.  This new venture is taking advantage of Carrboro’s unique mix of technology workers, web developers, college students, and artists. They are creating a community environment focused on a physical place where those who need reliable office space and the traditional support systems  in an office can congregate.  They then make this space available in smaller increments of time at a greatly reduced cost. The idea of having (and paying for )something expensive like a copier or a conference room only when needed is a great concept.  Using these resources in an environment used by like-minded entrepeneurs makes the idea even greater.

Providing support for a new class of productive and creative worker that CCC refers to as “mobile workers” is a phenomenon that is popping up all over the country and Carrboro is uniquely suited for a business that provides this sort of service.

While we are not mobile workers, we do need a way to stay connected with cutting edge thinking in our community and I look forward to paying a visit.

Maybe best of all (at least in Carrboro), they even have a parking lot.
