This article caught my eye in yesterday’s New York Times .  Matt Reynolds, an electrical engineering professor at Duke, is working on “self-powered” devices that use the radio waves all around us in the atmosphere to power electrical devices.  He has founded a company whose first product is a “beeper” built into a hard hat that can warn the wearer when he is too close to a piece of dangerous construction equipment.  The amazing thing about this beeper is it needs no external power source (no battery) because it is powered by radio waves.

Equipment on the job site transmits its location and when a wearer of the beeper-equipped hard hat gets too close, a warning buzzer lets him know to watch out.  Since the radio waves that provide power for the device are around all the time and free to anything that can utilize them,  this device has perpetual power-no battery change required-ever!

Radio waves are all around us in the atmosphere, produced by radio and tv towers, cell phone transmissions, Wi-Fi transmitters and lots of other sources.  Professor Reyonolds research and development allows harvesting of the the power from random waves without impacting those transmitted for a specific use.

Major companies like Intel have expressed an interest in this research and exploitation of  “random” waves has already proved that they can power some calculators and clocks, replacing a AAA battery.

Someday, your inability to “get that song out of your head” may be complicated by the fact that a radio wave powered device could actually be implanted in your head.

By the time you reach my age, changing batteries in the remote control (or anything else) usually starts with a search for my reading glasses.  If I can put the batteries in the wrong way, I will.

Microsoft (go figure?) has come up with a really elegant and practical solution for this problem.  They have designed a battery holder that has both a positive and a negative terminal.  This means that no matter how the battery is oriented, it will still work.  Genius.

Maybe Microsoft has finally come up with a winner.

The real  point I am hoping to make here is it seems almost as odd to me that a business might have only one web site.  We’ve got about twenty, and some days that hardly seems like enough.

With the cost of domain registration below $10 and offers left and right for “free” hosting, there is no reason to limit the way potential customers might stumble across your company.

Our strategy has been to take the different names of the products we sell and simply add the prefix “buy” in front of the name.  For example, we sell tape at buytape.com, batteries at buybattery.com, etc., but both domains link back to our primary domain.

Even with the scarcity of good domain names, combining something you sell or do with a “call to action” prefix or suffix can often generate a memorable domain name that is still unclaimed.  A  search at any number of domain registration websites can quickly help you define this technique.

A small but informative site that deals with only one component of your business can link back to your primary site in a way that leads prospects to where you would like them to end up.

These specialized content sites are very attractive to search engines as well, so you might be able to gain an advantage over your competition by addressing a very narrow niche.

Next time someone asks you if your business has a website, tell them “No, we don’t have a website.  We’ve got a dozen!”.

We sell a lot of batteries, particular around Christmas, and I am always surprised at how much the shipping cost adds to the final price.  Unfortunately, a 4 Pack of D Cell batteries weighs over a pound.  25 pounds for a case of 72!

ABC News reported on work being done at Standford University in developing a special paper coating that can be applied in a manner that creates a new type of high-performance energy storage.

This promising development in nanotechnology may some day power the electronic devices that today require alkaline or rechargeable batteries.  You might even be able to “wear” the battery that powers your cell phone and notebook computer.

Perhaps even more important, the scientists working on this development predict that the cost will be low and that they can see bringing this technology to the commercial market in the foreseeable future.

Not just lightweight, small electronics will be impacted.  This new way of storing power may someday.  This combination of supercapacitors and nanotechnology might even be used in electric cars.

It seems that  CVS Pharmacies has chosen “battery season” to fire a major shot over the bow of Engergizer Holdings, the manufacturer of Energizer alkaline batteries.  CVS, one of the nation’s largest battery retailers, has seen a major impact from the nation’s economic downturn on its alkaline battery sales.   They’ve decided that the best way to respond to this decrease in sales is by reducing inventory.

The winner in this skirmish?  The Duracell Coppertop.

CVS points to evidence that more consumers are buying their batteries from big box retailers or making their purchases online, where major savings can be realized.

CVS’s annual Energizer sales have been estimated at about $25 million.

Chances are that the long term results of this decision will reduce competition and cost consumers more in the end.

An article in Pro Sound News about Harman International caught my eye over lunch.  It was about Harman’s finances and it was as dry as toast.  I read every word.

Why?  Because Harman’s customers are my customers.  This company that did almost $3 billion in sales last year sells some of the most desirable brands in pro audio.  If you use equipment from makers like JBL, Souncraft, Crown, dbx or lots of other well known brands, you are a Harman customer.

Harman reported a decrease in pro audio sales of 26% in their last quarter.  If your sound business is not strong enough right now to buy a new JBL line array, then you are probably not doing enough shows to need a lot of gaffers tape.  If a new AKG wireless mic is not on your shopping list, then you probably aren’t going to be ordering ProCell batteries for it.  No dbx processing gear means no Hosa patch cables.

Two years ago the stock price for a share of Harman International was $100.00.  Yesterday, it closed at $37.00.   That’s up almost 10% since the first of this month and a near doubling of the price since October of last year.

How goes Harman, so goes the pro sound industry.  We wish them well.

Duracell’s “Hours of Power” program will make donations  to fire departments  in New York, Chicago, Knoxville Tenn., Springfield Mo. and Wichita Ks.   These local fire department will then distribute Duracell flashlights and batteries to city residents at no cost.

Best of all, you can participate and help maximize the value of Duracell’s program.  Every time you visit Duracell’s Hours of Power web site and click on the 100 Hours Button Duracell will increase the value of their contribution.  To date, 49,600 “Hours of Power” have been donated.  Their goal is 10 million hours which will convert to lots of flashlights, batteries and chargers donated to first responders and local citizens.

We live in a community that is regularly hard hit by weather-related power problems caused by hurricanes and ice storms.  It would be great if theis program was so successful that Duracell extended it to some cities in North Carolina.

For some reason, however, a Today Show video clip from the Video Music Awards caught my ear.I don’t usually watch awards shows, but the story about Kanye West jumping on stage during Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech stayed on my mind all morning.

Finally, about lunch time, it dawned on me why i couldn’t get this off my mind.

We had provided all the batteries for wireless mics used at the VMA Awards.

The batteries in the mic that Kanye West grabbed out of Taylor Swift’s hand had come from us. About two weeks ago we shipped a huge battery order to Radio City Music Hall for Moonman Productions, the video production arm of MTV.  It was a great order, but I didn’t really give it much thought.  Now we’re a side note to entertainment history.

I am usually proud to proclaim the reliability of ProCell batteries, but, just this one time, it might have been better if there had been a catastrophic battery failure.

One of our sites, wirelessmic.net, has suffered from lack of attention over the last several months, and there have been some very important developments in how wireless mics are used.  We’re ready to get back to work posting new, useful information.

The changeover to digital television in June has changed how many  frequencies traditionally used by wireless mics are allocated by the FCC.

If your church or school uses wireless microphones, you need to be aware of how the frequencies your mics transmit on have been affected by theis reallocation.

This article speculated that a lot of the Chinese buying was a stockpiling of material for which China’s manufacturers had no real demand.  If that’s true, then the Chinese buying binge may be over.

This may well explain the recent downturn in copper prices after a steady rise over the last six months. This rise made little sense in light of the overall worldwide decline in manufacturing.  If this downturn is real, it could be a harbinger for lots of commodity price reductions.

Why do we care?  The cost of extension cords (copper and rubber), mic stands (steel and aluminum), tape (cotton, oil and chemicals) and batteries (tin plate and many minerals) are all tied to world commodity prices.

Lets hope that if this recent reversal in commodity prices is real, that we will see it passed through to the products we sell.

While this may get Duracell lots of notice for their batteries, it has to be the most  inefficient method of  generating electricity ever invented.

In order to light the four numbers in the 2009 sign for 10-15 minutes, visitors to Duracell’s Power Lodge in Times Square will have to pedal at least 230 hours to store enough battery power for this stunt.

Even at the minimum wage, that puts the cost of producing this power at over $1500.00 ($100.00 per minute), and that doesn’t include the cost of the custom “snowbikes”, the batteries (not Duracell) that will store power, and the cost of operating the Power Lodge for the month leading up to New Year’s Eve.

Before you invest in Duracell’s idea of how to generate green power, you probably ought to take a look at this video .

I recently had to return my daughter’s digital camera, an Olympus FE230, for service.  She has  become quite a good photographer and was concerned that her camera suddenly seemed to only take”out of focus” photos.

She located Olympus’s online site for customer service and repairs and we shipped the camera off to an Olympus service center.  I’ve been through this sort of thing before, and I was prepared for the usual fist fight-slow or no service, warranty claim denied, six week wait, etc.

I shipped the camera on Monday.  Today is Thursday and she has the camera back in her hands.  That’s right!  In less than 72  the camera had gotten to the service center, been repaired, and returned to us.  They had even made sure that the memory card she mistakenly left in the camera was returned.

In an age when consumer electronics have become disposable items, its great to find a company that stands behind its products and understands how to build customer loyalty.

I’m guessing that there will be something from Olympus under our Christmas tree.

The article, by Mike Lawler, features Gideon Banner of the Green Theatre Initiative .  It is one that anybody involved in using or selling expendables to the theatre industry needs to pay attention to.

To date, the green theatre movement has primarily focused on infrastructure and on conservation.  Its great that new theatre facilities building is taking into consideration concepts like solar lighting, water conversation, and environmentally sustainable construction techniques.  Unfortunately, it takes generations for these sorts of changes to work their way through the system.  Theatre buildings last for decades, and quite often they are not able to easily be upgraded in an environmentally responsible way, even if funding is available.

More immediate results can be realized from simple conservation techniques.  Upgrading lighting fixtures to LED technology, using more efficient sound system components and addressing wasteful uses of energy and water are something that every theatre facility can address every day.

My concern, honestly, is how this green movement will impact our own business.  It is regrettable that the nature of expendables means that a lot of what we sell will end up in the landfill at the end of the show.  You can’t reuse tape, and rechargeable battery technology has not reached the point where sound techs are willing to trust them in wireless microphones.

We are always on the lookout for reusable solutions for cable management and we are working with Sanyo on their Eneloop rechargeable battery line in hopes of offering this product to our customers who buy batteries for wireless mics.

Between the price of the petroleum derivatives in tape adhesives and the cost of trucking these very heavy products, the cost of oil impacts the cost of every kind of tape we sell. There has been some short term moderation in the price of a barrel of oil, so we are hoping that our suppliers can hold the line a little longer. It is hard to connect the price of filling up your car with what you pay for a roll of gaffers tape, but the connection is real.

After peaking at $4.00 a pound in April, the price of copper is down about 10%, closing at just over $3.60 earlier in the week. As our cable business expands, the cost of the most important, and heaviest component, in an extension cord or speaker cable has forced suppliers to raise prices several times this year. Maybe those increases are over for a little while. Hopefully, this decrease in will help battery makers hold the line as well

Unfortunately, it seems like what one market gives back, another takes away. Dow Chemical’s announcement that it will raise chemical prices by up to 20%, effective this month, is going to impact much of we sell. Tape adhesive resins, battery components and cable jackets all have chemical components, and even if Dow isn’t the supplier, most other major suppliers are sure to follow.

Prosoundnews.com has an article today about a new counterfeit issue that the pro sound and audio visual production community needs to know about. Counterfeit Shure Microphones. The popular line of Shure Beta mics is apparently a new target for Asian counterfeit manufacturers. Anybody who purchases mics from small, unknown online dealers or any source they have no background on is at risk of being taken.

If you’re not particularly concerned about an industry giant like Shure losing sales or revenue, you might want to reconsider. If you buy a counterfiet mic, you may be a loser as well.

You may save some money on the purchase price, but there are several ways that your savings could evaporate in a hurry:

Use of substandard materials-Shure makes some of the most durable mics in the business. Counterfeiters do not.

Mics that do not perform up to spec-When miking a stage, you count on specs like “polar pattern” to get the best sound quality. It does not matter what you do if the mic doesn’t match the specs that Shure intended.

I’m sitting and staring at two glowing flashlights on my desk as I write this blog-one flashlight is using a couple of Duracell Procell AA batteries and an identical light contains a fresh pair of AA from a company called Permalife.

Unfortunately,it looks like the “Permalife” is going to be considerably less than “Permanent”. It’s already starting to dim.

We were excited when we got pricing information about the Permalife brand, as these batteries had real potential to save our customers some money. The savings evaporate in a hurry if it takes three or four batteries to match the performance of one ProCell.

It’s bad when a flashlight fails in use, but you usually get some warning. It gradually fades out rather than failing all at once. A wireless microphone is very different. Once its voltage in the transmitter falls below a certain point, the receiver becomes vulnerable to all sorts of outside interference. This can be disasterous or funny. Usually the former. Rarely the latter.

As the sun sets on this blog, the Permalife-equpped flashlight fades to black and our quest for a good no name battery continues. If we ever find one, I’ll let you know.

We spend a lot of time watching trends in rechargeable batteries, and the use of the USB interface as a port for charging a battery powered device is really starting to become common. IPODs and other MP3 players, cameras, recorders and lots of other devices with onboard rechargables now use the USB connection for battery charging. Unfortunately, those who moderate these forums (a thankless task, I know) have become so concerned about members using their forums to sell products that they are denying their membership the chance to take advantage of some of the most expert opinions available in the marketplace.

We have a very large product user base of stagehands and theatre techs, and almost every problem they face is going to cost them something to solve. Why deny these hard working technicians access to information from those who know these problem solving products the best.

I tried for a while to post solutions and start legitimate discussion on some of these forums, but I was constantly being threatened with banishment because the moderators did not want any links in their forums to any commercial sites.

Here’s a couple of quick examples.:

A number of theatre techs were discussing how to best remove adhesive residue from cables. I’ve done a lot of this and we sell a product that does the job really well. A link to this product on one of our web sites might have saved somebody a lot of time. Not Allowed!

I came across a post from a church sound technician who was concerned about poor battery life in her wireless microphones. It turns out that the church was using old-style carbon batteries in an attempt to save money. A simple link to buybattery.com where we sell the most highly regarded wireless mic battery around at very competitive prices might have been of real use to this person. Not allowed!

I understand the need to control spam and prevent postings from people who are selling something completely irrelevant to the discussion, but as long as these forum moderators attempt to block information from those who have the most to offer, they are not serving their members the best they could.

While Duracell remains healthy, it apparently is not generating the sort of growth numbers that P&G expects to see. It has been clear from the point of view of distributors that P&G did not meet the same standards for dealer support that had been provided by Gillette when they owned the brand. It will be interesting to see if a new owner can improve product delivery.

P&G has owned the ProCell brand for well over a year, yet there is still no reference to the product on their own web site. Not even a link directly to the duracell.com/procell web site. A “brand” search at the P&G website doesn’t even acknowledge the Procell brand.

More and more lawyers offices and courts are struggling with the technical demands of media coverage and the need for tech savy technicians in the courtroom. Gillette, the division of Proctor & Gamble that makes Duracell Procell batteries is involved in a daily struggle around the world to try and keep these products off the market. It’s a daunting task. Gillette reported recently that in a span of only one week they seized 1,000,000 counterfeit batteries in two provinces of China. In addition, they also found hundreds of thousands of razors and tooth brushes made with their brand names.

The problem with batteries is particularly vexing, as the problem of lost revenue is just the beginning. The safety concerns over unstable battery chemistry and the potential damage that can be done to the device in which the battery is used make it difficult to know the real cost of this problem.

That is that the international sale of counerfeit goods is at least partially run by organized crime and terrorist organizations that are able to raise money through these sales. We have sold Duracell Procell batteries for a long time and our largest user base is wireless mic owners. People had told me for years that one reason they preferred the Procell over Energizer’s Industrial line is that the Duracell Procells were slightly longer, and thus made better contact with the battery clips in the microphone transmitter.

If the blog posting you are looking for has been keyword enriched, then the writings of a small-time blogger will get the same attention as someone who writes for The New York Times.

Justin Timberlake’s Future Sex/Loveshow has taken the concept of staying connected to a new level. As reported in the July 2007 edition of PLSN magazine, the Timberlake summer tour is saving thousand of dollars on telco costs by carrying its own internet based phone system.

WANetics LLC is providing the hardware and technical expertise that lets the Future Sex/Loveshow skip the costs of having the venue provide expensive temporary phone service and hardware. Not only do they not incur local telecommunications expenses, but details like phone and fax number remain unchanged, regardless of where the tour is performing.

Each of the tours five departments (promoter, production, accounting, crew and tour management) has its own dedicated road case that accomodates phones, cables, a fax machine, batteries, wifi and an ethernet switch. All voice and data services are provided through a broadband internet connection and then distributed on a frequency that will travel well throughout the production area of the venue and will not interfere with WIFI frequencies.

According to the PLSN article, the tour reported that voice quality was excellent and that overall service was good even in venues where internet quality was less than perfect. Best of all, the whole system worked no matter what part of the world they were in. The system even provided special phone capabilities like voicemail and conferencing.

Personally, after having paid lots of these telco bills myself while working as a promoters rep, I’m not shedding any tears for the local phone companies that will lose this revenue stream. They consistently overcharged and underperformed.

Look for this service to become the standard for large touring organizations of all sorts in the near future.

Along with this interest comes an interest in reading the sports page. Some of the best writers for our local newspaper, The News and Oberver (Raleigh, NC) appear in the sports section and I have found myself drawn there every day. That may be about to change.

Yesterday’s front page of the sports section was really incredible. Out of six lead stories on the first page, only one was really about playing the game, whatever that game might be. Every other story was about some level of corruption in yet another major sport. The dog fighting scandal involving Michael Vick, Barry Bonds steriod use, doping allegations in the Tour de France, and gambling by an NBA referee all stole space from scores, trades and activity by local teams. It was more like reading a tabloid than a major newspaper sports page.

I grew up idolizing big league athletes, but my children have little interest in big time sports. This may or may not be related to the level of scandal, but, regardless, it means that they, and lots of their friends, won’t be buying tickets and purchasing merchandise.

We’ll continue to work with our customers who are involved in supporting major league sports, but if things don’t improve dramatically on the front page of the sports section, this is an industry heading for a major fall.

Unfortunately, I now have my own battery problem to relate. I periodically blog about wireless microphones, since we are the host of wirelessmic.net and because we were in the audio visual equipment rental business for many years. We still occasionally rent wireless mics.

I was preparing a rental package for a local sound company and discovered that two of our wireless transmitters contained corroded batteries. These were Everready Energizer Industrials, not the Procell batteries we sell. The offending batteries were well within their “use by” date code but they had leaked acid all over the battery contacts. Fortunately, the damage was limited to the battery contacts, but there was damage nonetheless.
